Letters from comrades suggest a major Italian offensive is near as Allied forces prepare further actions. Indications point to heavy combat and potential casualties with unclear outcomes for captured or killed servicemen.
Four letters received in Monroe discuss Dr Leonidas Barkdull Faulk of Monroe as dead in action on March 24 1918 near the Somme or possibly a prisoner after heavy shell fire. A letter dated April 1 4 and 5 states relatives are told he was killed, while a fourth hints at possible prisoner status. Letters note his bravery and a nurse-like care for his wife and son with wishes to locate grave and ship personal effects.
In a wartime note dated April 5 1918 from France Lieutenant C W Maxon informs the sender that an officer who knew Leon confirms a possibility he is a German prisoner of war and severely wounded. The message notes Leon was wounded March 24 while tending a soldier on the Somme retreat of the British army and that Roches nearby could not recover him. It ends with prayers for Leon and his child and a cautious desire for hopeful news.
Mrs Potter Palmer of Chicago dies at her winter home in Sarasota Florida aged well known society leader. Born in Louisville Kentucky she will be interred in Chicago with funeral arrangements announced.

Ed Evans a 32 year old white farmer from six miles below Rayville was brought to Francis Sanitarium with a fractured skull. He is said to be in critical condition after being struck with a hand-stick during a log rolling fight with Windham and his son, who were arrested. All men are framers and well known locally.
