Breach at the Atcha falaya river levee near Elba five miles north of Melville widens as Mississippi floodwaters surge south of Red River. Rescue boats operate around Batchelor with thousands evacuated and dozens feared dead. Louisiana officials mobilize 8 000 workers to shore up levees and prepare for further breaks.
Washington May 6 The House Agriculture Committee orders a unanimous report in favor of a 100000 appropriation for the Secretary of Agriculture to educate flood area farmers in crops and markets. Debate centers on whether seed distribution is allowed and the scope of aid for Mississippi Valley inundated lands.
Large sections of fifteen Louisiana parishes west of the Mississippi are under water with four more partly flooded.
