The senator denounces the Workingmen 3 compensation bill in severe terms. He argues the measure would impose unfair burdens on workers and raises questions about its economic impact and policy aims.
In Washington on May 4 the Senate again failed to vote on the workmen's compensation bill after three speeches. Senator Reed called it revolutionary, while Ashurst criticized federal courts and Davis warned he would resign to oppose the measure. Davis accused railroad lobbyists of pressuring passage as prophesied by Overman, who noted protesters would lose insurance if they spoke.
United Mine Workers officials in New York say a strike by 170 000 coal workers in three anthracite districts idle since April 1 has been averted. They expect a satisfactory agreement with operators by month end and a general convention is called in Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania.
Unsettled showers and thunderstorms expected tonight and Sunday. Forecast calls for possible localized downpours and peak activity in late evening into Sunday afternoon. Residents advised to monitor updates and stay safe indoors during strong storms.
Sub committees representing operators and mine workers proposed a tentative agreement signed by President White and three district presidents. If approved by the miners, workers return immediately. if rejected, a new joint conference will attempt a ratified settlement by referendum.

Rome reports the Italian fleet seized the island of Rhodes in the Aegean this morning. Rhodes has about 30 000 residents, largely Greek.
Reports from Morganza and Baton Rouge say the big Morganza levee remains intact. Major Kerr ordered closing of the Pontchartrain protection levee near the city to be completed. Refugees flood the area as crews with convicts work to shore the front. Floodwaters from Torras crevasse enter Atchafalaya swamps north of Melville.
Melville reports eight and ten hundredths inches of rain in six hours from 6 AM to noon. Levees hold and the river runs near stationary. Despite warnings, many families stay by possessions in low lands on both riverbanks risking flood. hundreds of livestock are at risk. Government barge supplies arrive.
Melville Louisiana residents sought high ground as 5 inch rainfall plus backwater from a southern crevasse sent the Atchafalaya to 41.8 feet. U S Army relief officers warned residents to evacuate immediately as levee sections began to slough and panic spread at the Texas and Pacific depot.

New Orleans reports conditions intensifying in flood zones along the Mississippi River and Red River extending to the Gulf of Mexico. The rising river prompted widespread warnings as telegraph and telephone networks carried emergency messages urging preparations for any emergency.
The Morganza levee near Baton Rouge was feared broken and towns southward warned of flooding. Reports described widespread panic, calls for relief, and preparations as evacuations and rail aid moved refugees toward safety amid rising river levels.
The Ouachita River remains nearly level with a noon gauge of just under forty five feet. Weather is cloudy and warm with likely rain. no further flooding trouble expected for this area, though decline when it begins should be rapid.
Eugene Jordan a six foot Negro faced Judge Schulze this morning on a charge of beating a woman. Evidence from exhibit A and the woman’s testimony sufficed to substantiate the charge. He was fined 100 dollars or 100 days on the ae.
