Police pursue suspects after a reported hold up ending in gunfire wounds to the suspects during a high speed chase. Officers recovered evidence at the scene and began an investigation. No officers were reported injured. Further details were not released.

Jackson Miss May 5 1A L P Phillips convicted of axe murder of an elderly farmer recluse in Jefferson Davis County Mississippi was executed at Prentiss in the portable electric chair. Phillips 47 strapped in chair at 1234 a m central war time pronounced dead seven minutes later. A sister and an uncle witnessed the execution. His earlier stays were denied by executive order.

Karl Heintz Alfred Fengler a 21 year old German alien recaptured after his second escape from federal custody was arraigned today by Commissioner A H Carter Jr for possession of another person’s craft cards. He was detained after the outbreak of war, escaped from Camp Kennedy Texas, fled to Lafitte, was arrested February 22, then escaped and returned. Bond set at 3000 dollars.
Tokyo radio said Admiral Mineichi Koga, commander of the Japanese combined fleet, was killed in March while directing operations from an airplane. He, 59, followed predecessor Yamamoto who died in 1943. Koga’s successor is Admiral Zengo Yoshida. Emperor Hirohito posthumously honored him with the first class order of the Golden Kite.
Dr. Lynn Harold Hough of Drew University calls the Methodist General Conference’s anti war stance retreat a historic shift. The 66 year old educator says the church now endorses active support for the Allied cause and the use of military force to resist aggression.
