American Flying Fortresses bombed a German air field in Holland as part of a broad Allied strike. British and American bombers hit northern France, Ludwigshafen, and other targets while Romanians' Bucharest faced night raids by Mediterranean Allied air forces. About 750 RAF bombers and 1,750 bombers overall participated, with significant losses reported on the British side.
Former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith’s wife Mrs Catherine A Dunn Smith died in St Vincent’s Hospital after a five week illness of virus pneumonia. She was in her sixties and survived by five children including Alfred E. Smith Jr. and Walter J. Smith.
