A Westbrook Pegler column accuses Henry Wallace of avoiding questions about his ties to Roerich and a costly Asia junket funded by taxpayers. It claims Wallace dodged scrutiny, deflected by media and radio to hide alleged misconduct and dubious wartime duties.
Interest grows in a United School Committee meeting at the Virginia Hotel Crystal Ballroom Tuesday at 7:30 p m. John Coles state chairman will discuss education issues as Mildred Moore district chair invites all interested citizens and school personnel to attend and participate. A similar district meeting will align plans for a unified approach to the next legislative session.
Washington May 4 Congressmen seek early hearings on a bill to create a $150,000 revolving fund for the army to buy U.S. cotton and wool and ship it to Japan for processing in mills. The plan aims to aid textile industries in occupied countries and reduce Japanese occupation costs by directing profits to the national economy.
In New Orleans on May 4 an insurance agent testified that companies avoided issuing policies to Huey P. Long associates after his 1935 death. Wilson Williams of New Enterprise Mutual Life testified under cross examination in the Noe federal jury conspiracy trial about a prejudiced report he had received and his subsequent investigation.
Senators agreed on restricting calls of doctors and dentists into the armed services while debating a two year draft and a one year teen training plan for 18 to 25 year olds. House leaders forecast quick action as a fire in Dyersburg, Tennessee cut power and water to 15 000 residents causing about 1 million dollars in damage.
The Supreme Court ruled the five major film companies violated anti trust laws via price fixing and distribution deals. It upheld most findings, sent lower courts to decide if they must divest theaters, and opened possible damage claims for independent theaters running into millions. Justice Douglas wrote the majority. Justice Frankfurter dissented.
Baton Rouge May 4 A pay raise and a six year term for the state superintendent of education head a slate of 17 proposed changes by the legislative committee on education after a two year survey. The panel urges using average daily attendance for funds distribution and supports a separate eight member governor appointed board for state colleges. It also seeks to raise per educable allocations to 40 dollars and create a group to study fund distribution.
King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan warned to UN that fighting in Palestine will grow horrific after May 15 and hint at Arab invasion as Britain ends mandate. U S and Britain clash on a Palestine trusteeship with Russia backing partition. U S plans a trusteeship while Britain condemns it as unworkable. Talks center on Jerusalem safeguards as a 58‑member committee meets.
Ohio voters faced a key Republican presidential primary pitting Harold E. Stassen against Sen. Robert A. Taft. Stassen aimed for 23 of Ohio's 53 delegates with 11 district targets, mainly in the northeast industrial area, while Taft expected at least 30 delegates including eight at large. Taft warned of a broader field impact, and Stassen argued for farm wage policy changes amid campaign stops and radio appeals.
A 32 year old Missouri Pacific signal maintainer Johnny Young of Olla was injured when a MoPac motor car derailed between Bosco and Fondale shortly before 11 p m Monday. He was hospitalized at St Francis Sanitarium with non serious injuries including a lacerated left shoulder and multiple bruises. The cause remains undetermined though the car overturned trapping him on the tracks. He freed himself with help after some time and was later picked up by an unidentified truck driver who called an ambulance. Young has 11 years with the railroad company.
Ichiji Nemoto, 22, a Japanese university student, was sentenced to five years at hard labor by a U S army provost court in Tokyo for attacking Military Policeman Christopher H. Miles Jr. at a Tokyo railway station. Nemoto grabbed Miles nightstick, seized a butcher knife, and struck Miles during the on duty confrontation. Miles and MP Osby Tomlin restrained him after a struggle.
Alabama voters faced a split choice on civil rights policy with Democrats deciding whether to back or oppose Truman's civil rights program. The ballot included electors pledged to ignore Truman and delegates prepared to walk out if a strong civil rights plank or Truman nomination occurs. Twenty-one of 28 elector candidates pledged to oppose Truman. Eighty four candidates vied for 26 delegate seats in a high profile race.
The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 0 that white homeowners may form private restrictive covenants to exclude minorities, so long as actions are voluntary. It held no redress under the 14th Amendment for those barred by such agreements, while permitting private groups to act on race or color without court intervention.
Chicago May 4 AP A mediation conference with railroads ended without progress toward averting a strike set for May 11. National Mediation Board chairman Frank Douglass said carriers offered no more than the presidential fact finding board’s 15 1/2 cent hourly wage rise, rejected by the Brotherhoods of Engineers Firemen Enginemen and Switchmen. Douglass and other officials planned further sessions, but warned Tuesday could be the last day with no change in positions. The White House was kept informed, and no government action appeared imminent to head off the strike by about 190 000 workers.
A violent tornado struck McKinney and Princeton Texas killing three and injuring 53 as it damaged homes and cut power lines. Across six states storms added 23 deaths and more than 156 injuries in 48 hours. Red Cross aid and field kitchens helped feed hundreds of homeless.
Athens reports 152 condemned murder convicts were executed after appeals were denied by the pardons board. Most killings are linked to the 1944 revolution. The Ladas assassination is cited as Communist plotted, with Premier Sophoulis vowing to uphold death sentences. Guerilla leader Markos Vafiades to be tried in absentia as alleged moral author.
Jewish forces reported capturing the Arab village of Yehudia near Tel Aviv after an all night battle with Arabs. Arab artillery shelled Jewish settlements north of Jerusalem, including Neve Yacov and Atarot, as fighting intensified with the end of the mandate near.
In Newnan, Georgia, a burned body identified as Wilson Turner, 26, a tenant farmer, was found after a two week search. Four men Wallace, Sivell, Mobley, and Myhand are jailed for murder. Wallace cousin Strickland as accomplice. Turner died after a car chase and beating.
