May 3 Jerusalem reports Jews deny Syrian and Lebanese forces entered northern Palestine while British reinforcements of about 1000 troops arrive from Cyprus. A 48 hour truce between Jews and Arabs in Jerusalem's Katamon district holds as negotiations for city wide terms continue. Fighting heard only in outer suburbs. Haganah claims repelled attacks on five Jewish settlements in the north.
Baton Rouge reports Louisiana’s civil service system operates impartially with 76.99 percent of classified employees not blanketed by noncompetitive exams. State Director Dan S. Moore says 4,279 entered non-competitive, 970 via federal merit council exams, and 13,344 through competitive or appointment. He notes public files show removals of unnecessary staff and payroll padding was checked during campaigns.
In Washington on May 3 Senator Overton of Louisiana, a Democrat, maintained EST despite daylight saving time. He has long campaigned to keep clocks on "God's time" and posted a sign declaring his office hours as 9 to 5 EST.
Washington May 3 AP The House armed services committee approved 28 to 5 a two year draft bill placing universal military service before Congress for the first time since the war The measure would raise total armed forces manpower to about two million and register men ages 18 to 30 with those ages 19 through 25 liable for two years of service Forrestal called the bill excellent and urged rapid action Royall said the services found it acceptable and no limited training provision was requested Andrews expects debate next week.
New tenants General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower occupy the 21 room Columbia University president residence on Morningside Drive. A large neighborly welcome greets them as Ike notes the trip from Fort Myer. He plans to take over as Columbia president on June 7.
Irving Cole of Sunbird Seaplane Service was burned and narrowly escaped drowning when a Chris-Craft runabout’s gasoline tank caught fire south of the old West Monroe bridge after 5 p m Sunday. He suffered burns to the face eyes left arm and leg but doctors called his condition good. The boat interior and upholstery burned as flames swept the craft before Cole could abandon ship. a seaplane and local boat crew aided in rescue and firefighting.
The Senate appropriations committee added about 200 million dollars in new projects to the House civil functions bill, including Louisiana river and navigation works. Senators Reed Bridges and Ferguson filed a minority report opposing the added funds. Senator Overton said passage in the Senate is likely, but a House Senate conference will trim new big projects, favoring near completion works, ongoing construction, and small essential projects. The Overton Red River waterway proposal was noted among the items discussed.
City council announced W C Salley won the bid for guniting Young Bayou Canal at 292077 dollars. Work will start after river falls and enlarge east and west prongs to improve drainage for Monroe. Isrell Brothers continue south end drainage on Jackson Street and Lee Avenue. Large Calypso pumping station also awarded to Salley to drain over half the city.
