The senate approved a controversial anti alien measure with only two votes against the objectionable California proposal. The passage signals broad legislative support though a narrow minority opposed the policy.
After ten hours of debate the California Senate approved the anti alien land law. The companion measure likely will pass the assembly Monday and be signed by Governor Johnson after a delay to hear protests from President Wilson. The bill lets aliens eligible to citizenship own land like citizens, while other aliens face treaty based limits and Japanese farmers are barred from owning farming and agricultural land.
Governor Johnson said he will sign an alien land bill after a reasonable hearing. The California Senate rejected a Curtin resolution urging deference to President Wilson and Bryan, and passed a measure barring aliens ineligible to citizenship from land ownership or leases beyond three years.
Senator Birdsadl defends a three point test for proposed legislation while Senator Boynton's amendment would allow ineligible Japanese to lease California lands for up to three years. The original $6000 reward was withdrawn and returned to donors the first of April. a substitute present or return of part of the fund will be decided.
Gov. Brewer said he will defer final action on Louisiana Governor Hall’s requisition for W. C. Walters, the alleged Dunbar child kidnapper, until next week. He cited other duties and noted Walters is jailed with Louisiana not pressing immediate action. He denied ordering Julia Anderson, mother of the child, to confront Walters and said Louisiana authorities handle any confrontation.
In Little Rock on May 3 the Arkansas Fertilizer Company plant was wiped out by a fire fueled by gases from sulfuric acid and bone fertilizer. The blaze reached two 80 000 gallon sulfuric acid tanks, exploded with water, and sent flames high into the air. Insurance covered the roughly 100000 dollar loss. The plant employed about 200 workers, with officers H B Bennett as president, H Williams as secretary, and E F Newhouse as general manager.

D Wyne acting section foreman of Swartz section shot and wounded Roudolph Hughes at the Swartz section house yesterday afternoon. Hughes fled toward his home, while Wyne surrendered to Sheriff Jack Parker. Hughes hospitalized in Monroe sanitarium. Wyne jailed awaiting outcome.
