A steamer named Concordia struck a large iron bridge and sank today after a report of a deadly incident. Black victims and a mine owner described a violent event ending in casualties and financial loss.
A masked bandit robbed passengers on a Kansas City Southern train after midnight and entered a Pullman berth to demand money from Jesse Short, a Joplin mine owner. Short and the robber exchanged shots. Short was wounded by three bullets and authorities pursue the wounded robber, who took about $1500.
Texarkana Arkansas May 7 The annual election of teachers for the Arkansas side of town resulted in few changes. G W Reid was unanimously re elected superintendent and Carl McGannon was re elected High School principal. Miss Pearl Williamson succeeds Mrs Mary Wood as English teacher and Miss Beatrice Prait replaces Miss McKinnell in Latin and German. R L Harris succeeds Otto Martin in science. The retiring teachers did not seek re election.
May 2 at 2 p m Natchez reports three white men drowned in a steamer incident on the Concordia The vessel carrying 130 refugees went down with all officers escaping A geoghagan of Jonesville and W L Prim Natchez clerk are named among the unidentified victims.
Engineer Kerr in charge of levee work at Poydras, thirteen miles south of New Orleans, hopes a crevasse has been prevented as a new levee is built behind the current embankment. Water from Gibson Landing crevasse will not flow back into the Mississippi until tonight or tomorrow, likely causing another rise from the Red River mouth to the Gulf.
In New Orleans area, at the Poydras levee thirteen miles south of the city, a dozen willing Black workers sprang into a crevasse to stop the river breach. As water rose rapidly after 5 AM, they held back the flood until sand bags could be filled and placed, saving another district from disaster.
Two new houses in West Monroe were destroyed by fire at 4 30 this morning. J B Howard lost about 8000 to 10000 with 2250 insurance on furniture and 2500 on the house.
