The Associated Press reports widespread flooding in Louisiana and Arkansas as the Mississippi crevasses flood parishes and towns. Levees hold at most points, but the Vaucluse levee near Lake Village failed briefly. Thousands seek refuge, with food shortages emerging and relief work under way.
Lieuts Percy and Hayden lead Monroe Louisiana National Guard into Harrisonburg to guard camps holding flood victims. Red Cross officials from Lake Charles assume roles at Rhinehart and nearby sites. Hundreds of refugees line hills from Sicily Island to Jena with scant food as camps form along a 40 mile stretch.
Deputies Milton Coverdale D L Roper and C D Meredith raided Mattie Brown in Williams addition West Monroe seeking liquor violations. They found her child apparently dying and seized four half pints of white lightning and the woman in the act of selling liquor. Brown was jailed on the liquor charge after the child died. she promised to stand trial later.
Monroe and West Monroe Sunday Schools combined drew 2 073 attendees the largest total in city history. Baptist led with 618, followed by First Methodist 379 and West Monroe Baptist 248. other churches ranged from 212 to 43 in order, including Louisiana Training Institute and Grace Episcopal.
Dublin May 1 The local commandant of the Dissident army in Clome warns leading Sinn Feiners supporting the Anglo Irish treaty that their movements are dangerous to the Irish republic and that any action against the independent executive council troops will be their personal responsibility.
Levee workers along the Mississippi in eastern Arkansas prepared for the final and possibly most serious stage of the flood. Crest projections show Helena and Arkansas City affected, with the Vaucluse levee under watch despite repairs and ongoing guard measures by 500 workers.
The Mississippi River levels near Arkansas City and Greenville show little change with a likely small rise over the next two to three days. Readings at 7 a.m. report Memphis 42.2 feet, Helena 53.0, Arkansas City 57.6, Greenville 51.8, Vicksburg 54.7, Natchez 53.0, New Orleans 21.3, Monroe 41.3. A telegram from J W Summerlin notes a fall to 57.4 at gauge and other minor shifts, with levee conditions described as satisfactory and Louisiana labor called to replace workers for at least a week.
The tracks of the Vicksburg Shreveport and Pacific in Delta Louisiana have been raised to withstand fifty-five to fifty six feet of water in the Mississippi River on order by J C Stams superintendent. If more water arrives the railroad can maintain service longer. Locomotives for this division were sent eastward several days ago.

E C Smith sold to the Needham Lumber Company, Inc. timber rights a sawmill and business for 28622.79. The plant, four miles west of Monroe in Ouachita Parish, was leased from S J Riveire and bought at sheriff’s sale. W M Parker sold land to B J Peasley in Hudson addition, Monroe.
Missouri Pacific rail workers in flood stricken stations at Clayton Clayton Junction Ferriday Junks Greenville Wildaville and Panels plan to stay on duty unless waters rise over roofs. Telegraph operators continue sending updates to headquarters detailing the situation and hoping the water recedes.
A large crowd enjoyed the twelfth community sing Sunday afternoon in the High School Auditorium. Local performers Miles Johnson and O Niel from New Orleans presented special numbers with Doug Miles on banjo and Tom Johnson singing popular melodies. O Niel sang Thine Eyes Have Told Me So and The Sunshine of Your Smiles. Chair Hammonds praised the program committee. The thirteenth community sing will be held in West Monroe next Sunday afternoon at the school auditorium with a promised good program.
The Monroe fire department answered two calls today. At 1:15 a m crews battled a blaze at Eleventh and Grammont streets destroying four small negro houses and their furniture. A second fire at 5:45 p m affected a seven room negro house on Adams Street between Eleventh and Twelfth streets.
