Nationalists tighten control across 52 provinces as Franco forces push to stabilize Madrid after 32 months of civil war. Police round up thousands of Republicans for classification possibly for trial while gunfire echoes in Madrid and surrounding areas.
Johnny Torrio, longtime underworld figure linked to Al Capone, has bail revoked and faces federal charges for conspiring to evade $86,000 in income tax from 1933 to 1935. Co-defendants include William Stackbower James La Penna Louis La Cava and John D Agostino. Up to 12 years possible with fines.
