Explosion rocks Philadelphia granary on Market Street
A massive blast leveled a four story granary near 30th and Market in Philadelphia last night. Four missing presumed dead, four others on critical list, many injured as debris and smoke filled the area near Tidewater Mill and Elevator Co. It was reported near 8:10 p.m. and the blast blew windows, toppled furniture, and scattered wreckage across the block.

Burglaries Hit Church Office and Local Plant
The Claiborne Methodist Church office was burglarized Wednesday night with a 70 year old watch cuff links and about five dollars taken. Rev. F L Hearne blamed juveniles due to the door damage and lack of tools. The Crews Concrete plant office on highway 80 west was also broken into but yielded nothing of value. Sheriff Bailey Grant reported no arrests.

Southside High School Teacher Loses Home to Fire
Fire swept through librarian and Southside High School instructor F. D. Backman’s home at 4314 Lee Avenue around midnight Wednesday. Four rooms were demolished and smoke damaged two others as flames raced from a bathroom heater. Backman alerted by shouting fire and ran outside to summon help. a city bus barn worker alerted the fire department. The blaze began in the bathroom and spread to the attic, destroying the living and dining areas and other living spaces.

Bees On Bumper Won't Take Flight
New Orleans resident Woyd Smith reports bees swarming on his car bumper for three days. He drove over rough roads to try dislodging them, but the insects remained. A beekeeper plans to attempt luring the bees away later today.

University student shoots ROTC instructor and commits suicide

Funeral Set For Winnsboro Man Killed In Crash
Funeral services for Whitley Jones 52 of Winnsboro will be Friday at 10 am at Winnsboro First Methodist Church. Jones died after losing control on highway 15 near Monroe, his car hit three road signs, overturned and victims pinned inside. He was a Winnsboro barber and served on the church board of stewards. Interment at the new cemetery under Mulhearn Funeral home. Survivors include wife Opal Brand Jones two daughters Joy Beavers and Jeannie Newton and one granddaughter Brenda Newton.
