The Office of Price Stabilization ordered restaurant prices frozen at their February 3–9 level effective April 7. About 500000 eating establishments must post ceilings on main items, with price changes allowed only on OPS orders based on wholesale food costs.
Monroe Rotarians elected Warren Taylor president at a Thursday meeting at the Virginia Hotel. He succeeds Dr. George Wright. Lewis C. Slater was chosen vice president and C. B. Braun secretary treasurer. Delegates and alternates to the 202nd district Rotary International convention were named. A tuberculosis awareness film followed the vote.
The Senate agreed to limit debate and vote on offshore lands issues starting noon EST Wednesday. It will decide whether federal revenues from oil leases off the coast should fund state school grants and whether the federal government or states own offshore lands and minerals. The move comes amid prior delays to the submerged oil lands legislation and competing priorities.
J N White aged 82 died at his home in Louisville Kentucky after a long career as a pioneer in the cooperage industry. He owned major stakes in a large coop erage plant and with his son once owned the Louisville Cooperage Company plant in Monroe before sale to liquor interests. He is survived by his wife and grandchildren including Captain Roger C White Jr held as a prisoner of war in China and others in Dallas Louisville and Monroe.
Kenneth of Natchitoches won LSU student body president as elections named Marvin Rushing of Rayville as student body vice president and Fay Moreland of Baton Rouge as co editor vice president. Other college leaders include Andermann in Agriculture, Duncan in Arts and Sciences, and Leake in Education with several campus officers announced.
Louisiana state Senator-designate M Eloi Girard of the 15th District says lawmakers should be barred from contracting with the state. The Lafayette nurseryman and sweet potato shipper plans to introduce a bill when the Legislature meets in May. He criticizes current laws as ineffective.
Allied truce negotiator Col. Don YU Darrow said the Communists are delaying the armistice to argue over Russia supervision and how to identify United Nations forces. He noted staff officers may defer the Russia issue to top negotiators. Darrow suggested two nations per side and dismissed six-nation plans.
Dublin researchers plan excavations at the Tara site in County Meath near the rath of kings where early synods led by St Patrick are said to have been held over 1,500 years ago.
A deadly king cobra believed loose in Denver after escaping from a reptile garden operator’s car during a burglary attempt. Police guarded the area for hours with no sightings as snake shipments bound for Bergen Park remained in the vehicle. A blue indigo was found nearby and Denver General Hospital sought serum for cobra bites.
Louisiana State University research shows February business up 1.1 percent from January and 11.8 percent higher than February 1951. Gains occurred in life insurance sales 16.6 percent, industrial electric power use 4.3 percent, bank debits 1.3 percent, and payrolls 1.1 percent. Losses hit department store sales 9.1 percent, advertising freight 0.9 percent, and farm commodity prices 0.5 percent.
Marine pilot Captain William B. Smart of Leesville Louisiana was shot down and captured near North Korea. A rescue helicopter piloted by Lt. John R. Calhoun from Missouri flew into intense fire, disabled Reds, and pulled Smart to Allied lines aided by Pvt. David Kroll.
MOBILE AL A Wage Stabilization Board order gave Alabama Dry Dock & Shipbuilding workers a 25 cent an hour raise retroactive to Jan 7. The six month strike settlement involved about 2,700 employees, roughly 700 more than before the plant walkout in July. Shipyard activity rises.
In Tehran today a 15 minute clash erupted after a Communist led rally backing Russia s germ warfare charges against the United States. Police fire was used to disperse rioters injuring many including police and youths. at least five killed and about 260 injured were reported amid the violence.
The May 20 election deadline closes at 5 p m today. Five mayoral candidates qualify so far Jack Howard George Tidwell Rufus P Ponsell John E Coon and Thomas D Spatafora. Three seek Commissioner of Finance and Utilities Frank X Cline Fran Brennan and Fred M Millsaps. Streets and Parks candidates are John P Simmons and Loyd Lane with Democratic primary contenders Roy Q Cole Sr C H Reid Henry Haas Sr George Fink and Joseph A Battaglia.
SAN FRANCISCO The Shrine Directors Association of North America chose New Orleans as the site for its April 1953 convention with Jerusalem Temple as host. The association elected T. C. Young of Tehama Temple Hastings Nebr president, succeeding William S. Johnson of Aad Temple Duluth Minn.
Washington reports an improved warning system developed with the Weather Bureau and Air Weather Service to give advance alerts of tornadoes and severe storms. At Tinker AFB representatives discuss faster detection and broader public notice to reduce tornado tolls after recent deadly outbreaks.
Wayne Huckaby a maintenance engineer at the state announces he is qualifying for commissioner of streets and parks. He brings over 20 years in highway construction and maintenance plus World Wars I and II service and leadership in engineering and veterans groups. His wife and daughter Marion Huckaby accompany him as he seeks public service.
Representatives of the Louisiana Hospital Association and two affiliated groups meet in Alexandria to arrange the May 8-9 convention. Secretary-treasurer Jesse Bankston says the session at 2 p.m. will name convention committees and may include Robert Guy among attendees.
