The four power Pacific treaty won senate ratification by four votes over the two thirds threshold. Leaders hope to finalize the pact with the supplemental treaty on domestic issues. Opponents plan to renew efforts when the supplemental declaration is considered.
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce issued an invitation to the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation to appoint delegates for a conference in Monroe to establish the Louisiana Cotton Growers Association. The letter, from Secretary Collins, stresses Monroe as the ideal meeting place and pledges full support to ensure strong attendance and a successful conference.
The four-power Pacific treaty was ratified by the senate by a 67 to 27 majority. Republicans supported it with 65 votes while 4 opposed. 12 Democrats backed ratification. The vote followed a party whip drive and included several noted irreconcilables under the Brandegee reservation aimed to show no alliance.
Dr. H D Muench, director of rural sanitation, tours Monroe reporting five Ouachita state health units have slashed costs. Parishes Beauregard, DeSoto, Natitoches, Ouachita, and Caddo show savings from annual vaccination and health services, with Beauregard dropping from 16700 to 2900 dollars and DeSoto from 10700 to 8400.
Western Star Lodge No. 24 F and A M sells the DeSiard street lot adjoining the Masonic temple for 14250 dollars to John M Munholland Max Lanwitz and others. The Munholland Lanwitz Furniture Company will erect a new home for the furniture firm on site when its lease ends on the present building.
Ouachita parish police jury will award the second mile of paving under the million-dollar road plan on April 19. Work includes paving along Nat toches road in West Monroe at an estimated cost of eight to ten thousand dollars to improve street conditions.
Lake Charles Ku Klux Klan plans a parade in the business district between 9 and 10 o'clock tonight. The group sent a letter to Judge Thomas Portier Jr and Judge W W Bailey along with District Attorney Griffin Hawkins Jr and Sheriff Horace Lyons, defending its stance and offering a $260 reward for any arrest or conviction of lawbreakers acting under Klan authority.
Pilot Robert Moore and five passengers on the flying boat Miss Miami were forced down by a broken propeller near Miami while en route to Bimini. Two women died, another woman and a man died from exhaustion, and Moore survived after clinging to wreckage for over fifty hours until rescue by the steamer William Green.
The Lock Joint Pipe Company of Orange New Jersey has opened two Monroe plants to manufacture sewer pipes. One sits on Olive Street and the other near the Iron Mountain depot. Initially to serve Monroes sewer project this year the plants aim to be permanent due to strong demand across the state and sourcing materials locally.
The North Louisiana Agricultural Society will hold its first monthly meeting of the year on March 30 at the Calhoun experiment station grounds. A farm bureau program will feature Harry F. Kapp and other speakers outlining the organization’s purpose and plans for Monroe territory.
The Fifth Congressional District athletic rally concludes this afternoon with finals in basketball among twelve towns. The Monroe park hosted the track and field meet Saturday with events in sprints, jumps, throws, and relays.
Mrs. M. A. Byers aged 85 died at her daughter E. W. Murray's home last night at 10 30. She is survived by son D L Byers and daughter E W Murray both of Monroe. Born in Deerfield Ohio she lived in Monroe for twenty years and was popular locally. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 from E W Murray's residence. Burial followed at Riverview cemetery.
In Cleveland, Ohio, national union leaders plan to rally two hundred thousand non-union miners to join the strike in April. They expect broad support from about half a million union men and say calls to non-union workers will go out in several states next week.
El Dorado Oil Co plans to resume work on the Clark No. 1 well of Homer El Dorado in Union Parish within days. President J. D. O’Brien says a drilling rig will be moved from El Dorado to the site next week and the well could be a major producer once completed.
