A gas pipe explosion sparked a major blaze that began in the Arcade building and spread through three blocks bordered by Union avenue Market and West Clinch street. Melcher proprietor of a barbers supply store lived above his shop and was severely burned. Between 50 and 100 people fled hotels in night attire as firefighting units battled simultaneous outbreaks.
