Washington dispatch says Garner plans a political bloc with James Farley to prevent a Roosevelt third term. They reportedly consider Farley for second on the ticket, with Illinois primary results seen as pivotal for Garner’s convention influence.
After weekend verbal jabs in the census dispute Senator Tobey accuses Secretary Hopkins of coercing answers to census questions. Hopkins counters with humor about matching honorary degrees. A GOP leader notes sealed envelopes may neutralize Tobey’s push for a Senate record before April 2 census start.
Father Kastellic, a Catholic priest, vanished during an ascent of Mount Aconcagua on the Argentine-Chilean border. Gale torn camp remains found within 464 feet of the summit lead Andes sealers to believe he was swept to his death. He had continued the climb solo after his companions urged retreat.
In St Clairsville Ohio on March 18 officials said all 73 Willow Grove mine victims were declared dead or presumed dead after a massive explosion. Rescue teams battled slate falls while 106 miners were rescued, and 71 remained entombed with two more deaths reported from poisonous fumes. John Owens of the United Mine Workers warned no one may be alive, as experts aided Hanna Coal Co in efforts to reach the trapped workers.
A car veered off a bridge near Oak Grove early Monday and plunged into a water filled ditch. Edwin Gill, Henry Hurley, and Roberta Challen died, while R C Massingill escaped after hours trapped on the back seat. Massingill survived with shock and exposure. the driver was asleep at the time. The victims were returning to Oak Grove from Tallulah and were held in an Oak Grove mortuary pending funeral arrangements.
In Reading Pennsylvania on March 18 a crowd of about 5000 heard 74 year old Alah C Schaeffer play cornet over the grave of Tom Hannahoe on Neversink mountain. Since 1897 Schaeffer has honored Hannahoe on St Patrick’s Day with Lass O Gallway and Nearer My God to Thee. Hampered by rheumatic fingers, Schaeffer’s role was filled by R Elmer Addis and Hayden Goodhart who performed the music last night.
Calvin H. Campbell Sr. a 47 year old former Colorado Fuel and Iron official, killed himself with a penknife while under an oxygen tent after a nurse’s brief absence. He died soon after and had endured pneumonia and nine major operations. His death followed the loss of his son Thomas Lewis Campbell in a Texas auto truck crash.
Mrs Myrtle L Haiman 49 a clerk at the veterans administration fell from the Transportation building near 17th and H today. Police said she left a note asking forgiveness and to notify Dr W R Levy her brother in Jackson Tennessee.
Mrs. Julia Brown Colt, ex-wife of Samuel Gil bert Colt Jr., fires up Beverly Hills reporters by denying or confirming romance rumors with Winthrop Rockefeller. She says they are “very good friends” and have been seen together often.
The Senate approved an amendment to curb political contributions by state employees partly paid from federal funds. Senator Neely said the measure protects state workers from pressure, as debate moved toward a final vote expected by 3 p.m. EST. The House may shelve the measure this session, while Speaker Bankhead opposed Hatch legislation. Bankhead also forecast a $300 million increase in next year’s farm supply bill as surplus removal funds rise.
Hollywood reports actor Irving Cohen aged 37 was arrested on telegraphic information from New York as wanted for first degree murder. Deputy says Cohen is among 11 held in a Brooklyn gangland murder probe led by District Attorney William F. O'Dwyer, with possible arrests in Los Angeles.

Washington reports a federal committee will hear about state laws restricting interstate trade. Barriers include discriminatory taxes licenses and quarantines across agriculture and motor freight. States must voluntarily remove many barriers though courts may test constitutionality.
In Carville Louisiana a plantation leprosarium houses 119 men, women and children living with leprosy. Most will spend their lives there with uncertain futures yet show surprising cheerfulness and courage amid isolation and limited medical knowledge. Harold E. Dahl, an aviator once condemned to death by a court martial in Spain, arrived in the United States aboard the freighter Extra with five other Americans after nearly three years in prison and a Fascist firing squad ordeal. Authorities in Los Angeles noted possible bad check warrants, potentially barred by statute of limitations, while Dahl recalled his Spanish conflict and pardon.
Miss Ada Lockwood of Shreveport died after a car overturned about 13 miles south of Carthage Texas while returning from Houston. Four others, including Mrs John Martin of Houston and Mr and Mrs F T Hicks of Shreveport, were injured.
In New York on March 14 three children ages three and 18 months attempted to bathe their three month old sister in scalding water while their mother was away at Palm Sunday services. The infant is hospitalized with serious burns and a possible skull fracture. The father, a night engineer, slept nearby as the siblings moved the baby from her crib to the tub, dragging her across the floor and dropping her.
Berlin sources say Mussolini and Hitler discussed European reorganization with Soviet Russia as a partner. Welles, in Europe for Roosevelt, met Mussolini and conferred with officials in Rome and Brenner Pass while speculating on Italy joining Germany’s side if Italy ceases neutrality.
Adolf Midler Premier Munschadt held a secret two and a half hour meeting at Brenner pass on the Italian side amid talk of a drive to end the European war. In Rome Mussolini’s car conference, Pope Pius XII and Sumner Welles also met at the Vatican in what observers see as a diplomatic push.
In New Orleans on March 14 detectives aimed for a quiet arrest of two brothers wanted for party robberies. After a long stakeout the youths fled, scaling windows and roofs as Detective Edward White pursued through the home, roof, and drain pipe, drawing a crowded neighborhood to witness the drama.
