In Italy March 17 Ernie Pyle reports trains running with modern electric cars yet far from prewar capacity. Soldiers crowd platforms and ride atop cars while street vendors and a ration black market appear. A soldier’s ration tale and a sleeping bag remark close the dispatch.
Four American war correspondents were injured when a fighter bomb strike wrecked their Anzio beachhead headquarters. George Tucker of the Associated Press suffered a right foot injury. William Strand of the Chicago Tribune a fractured arm. Wick Fowler of the Dallas News a leg injury. and George Slim Aarons of a magazine region had facial cuts.
East Baton Rouge parish grand jury indicted eight individuals on election fraud charges from the recent primaries. Named in the report to Judge G Caldwell Herget are Assistant Chief of Police McBurney Card Lieutenant James E Dominguez Beulah C Barr Vince Brocato Charles Bonacarso Oren Andrews Willard Smith and Tracy Stephans. The men face counts of false swearing and conspiracy to commit false swearing while Beulah Carr is charged with registering to vote falsely.
Still off Gripsholm in Jersey City as 128 passengers remain to be ashore tonight. The Swedish motorship docked with 62 detainees from German camps and 534 cleared after examinations. Nineteen sent to Ellis Island. 83 more expected today. Mrs. Mathilda Metzl, 77, returns to Chicago after years abroad. Thirty-five wounded soldiers receive Purple Hearts at a hospital.
Eleven soldiers with the 66th division, many from company M, 264th Infantry, drowned when two assault boats capsized during amphibious maneuvers near Camp Robinson in Little Rock. All bodies were recovered and a board investigates. The accident followed assault boat training and river crossing before supper. Earlier, a surface mine killed 12 soldiers and injured 16 at the same camp.
In Stockholm Finland delivered its reply to Russia's armistice terms, with a Finnish source saying little hope for peace. Moscow awaits the note after Helsinki seeks to publish its contents tomorrow, while parliament reportedly rejected the terms over Germany's seven divisions and possible Red Army intervention.
Helsinki officials say the Finnish government must give serious consideration to President Roosevelt's urging Finland to withdraw from its hateful partnership with Germany. They regret the timing, noting the Finnish parliament had already decided, while opposition press displays Roosevelt’s call prominently.
Rear Admiral Carleton H. Wright told the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco that a head-on clash with the Japanese fleet could end in victory but would bring heavy losses. He noted the Allies now control the central Pacific, ships can operate near shore aircraft, and carrier planes can threaten harbors.

Private Henry C. Salley of West Monroe Louisiana earned the Distinguished Service Cross after heroic actions at Biscari airport in Sicily. He crawled within 30 yards of a machine gun, destroyed it with a grenade, used a grenade launcher to halt a threatening German tank, and helped wipe out a German platoon preventing a breach in lines. He is the son of Mrs Harriet P. Salley.
Soviet dispatches report Red Army drives reaching toward Odessa and Nikolaev as German lines buckle. Russians push along the Odessa Lwow rail axis, shielding escape routes toward Bessarabia and facing fierce fighting near Proskurov as Konev advances from the Dniester region.
Dublin on St Patrick's Day shows restrained public display as Prime Minister Churchill warned of Eire isolation. pubs closed, O Connell Street crowded with shamrock adornments, Red Cross nurses lead a small unarmed guard column, national army kept in barracks. Ireland largely pro Allied at about 90 percent.
At a station in England the base mourns two fighter aces lost in a Berlin raid. Lieutenant Anthony Carcione of Bethlehem Pa, 24, famed as Peck’s Bad Boy, downed four German planes before vanishing on March 7. Lieutenant Joseph Ward of Granite Falls N C had just earned ace status a week earlier.
Grand Rapids Mich March 117 final arguments closed in the trial of David Filgas 16 charged with murder in the December death of Patricia Winters 17. Prosecution urged guilty of at least manslaughter arguing circumstantial evidence equals an eyewitness while defense contended the fire was an accident and the fire could not prove guilt. Judge Brown limited closing remarks to three hours as jurors deliberate.
War Department confirms 410 American paratroopers killed after 23 U S transport planes were mistaken for enemy ships and shot down by allied antiaircraft gunners and enemy artillery during a July 10 11 1943 mission near Gela Sicily.
Allied headquarters in Naples reports Fifth Army units pushing through bombed Cassino to its southwestern outskirts and capturing several prominent heights above the ruined town. New Zealand troops cleared rubble after a heavy bombardment, while Germans clung to hill positions near Monte Cassino Abbey and defense lines along Via Casilina.
Hugh McAteer, 29, Irish Republican Army leader and treason convict, enters the 24th day of a hunger strike in Belfast seeking political prisoner status. Ten pounds lost, water intake high, with 12 other inmates joining. Strikes spread to Londonderry. Ulster minister refused to allow immediate family access in London.
In New York on March 17 an estimated 50,000 will march in the 16th annual St Patrick’s Day parade honoring the patron saint of Erin. A million spectators are expected if the weather holds. Grand marshal is Captain Stephen J Meany, Jesuit priest and chaplain of the 165th Infantry, the Fighting 69th, who is on sick leave. Civil, military, and naval leaders will review the parade from platforms on 64th Street and near St Patrick’s Cathedral.
U S strategic air force reports 128 enemy planes shot down over Ulm and Friedrichshafen in southern Germany. American bombers lost 12 planes. 22 failed to return. R A F followed with night raids on Clermont Ferrand and Amiens. Stuttgart and other targets also hit with a record for Berlin raids earlier this month.
President and Mrs Roosevelt observed their 39th wedding anniversary as he remained at his desk in Washington. An anniversary message was sent to Mrs Roosevelt who was visiting armed service bases in the Caribbean. The couple wed on St Patrick's Day 1905 in New York City with Theodore Roosevelt giving the bride away.
