A wireless report from Italy recalls a demonstration of a new rifle grenade device behind the lines. Generals and colonels attended, with chairs set for them outdoors. A soldier notes the 47th bomb group’s emphasis on cogs and jokes about dogs and medical orders, mentioning Lieutenant Colonel Reginald Clizke as a notable figure.
Allied infantry and tanks pushed into Cassino amid ruins from a record air strike as German resistance slowed progress. First Lieutenant James M. Walley, a New Orleans marine fighter pilot, shot down a Zero near Rapopo airfield during a mission against Rabaul. It marked his second victory over a field in Bougainville, with another confirmed kill at Kahili air field on Bougainville last September. Walley enlisted in 1942 and earned his wings in 1943. His wife and parents are listed with New Orleans and Metairie addresses.
Passengers leave the Gripsholm liner in Jersey City as repatriates recount Nazi interrogations and harsh food. Polish American Marie Tomczak, 26, describes wartime flight from Poland, loss of fiancé, Gestapo surveillance, and internment before heading to Pittsburgh for war plant work.
North Carolina delegates approve a 25 man slate at a convention and push for Governor Dewey as a preferred open candidate. Oswald John Job a British subject of German parentage was executed at Pentonville Prison in North London for espionage convicted in January. Testimony showed he was sent by the German secret service to gather bomb damage data and public morale status. He reportedly lived in Paris from 1911 to 1940 before German move in.
The United States joined Britain in appealing to the Finnish people to break from Germany. President Roosevelt urges a disassociation from Nazi alignment as Finland's parliament appears to reject Soviet armistice terms amid ongoing Russo-Finnish peace efforts.
A six alarm blaze in the Parkway apartments at Squirrel Hill drove 24 families to the streets. Fire Chief William H. Davis estimated $25,000 in damage as the four story brick building burned from the rear up a ventilating shaft. Hoseman William Mayberry, 35, was treated after being overcome. Mrs. Bertha Levy, 83, was aided to safety. A tenant recovered a roll of money and another found $30,000 in diamonds undamaged.
Washington March 16 The service vote bill moves to the White House for decision. Presidents poll of governors may decide, with states rights critics calling it bob tailed. The measure requires US servicemen to use state ballots at home and federal ballots abroad if requests are filed by September 1 and no state ballot is received by October 1.
In New Orleans on March 16 1943 the Navy divided the Howe brothers after the policy change banning same family members on one ship. Eugene 21 and his brothers Loren and Lorence, twins, from Granger Indiana, had trained at Great Lakes and Gulfport before serving together on a cargo vessel. They lament the loss of shared duty and fear the same fate as the Sullivan brothers. Harold remains at Great Lakes in separate duties.
U S air forces blasted a 350 mile segment of Japan defense in the southwest Pacific with a 500 ton attack. Gen Douglas MacArthur announced progress as fliers targeted Oroluk atoll in the eastern Carolines and pounded Wewak and Rabaul while 21 enemy planes were credited to Col Neal Kearby who later went missing in action.
Secretary of War Stimson asserted that all strategic aims in Italy have been achieved. He listed six points including opening the Mediterranean to Allied shipping and knocking Italy out of the war. Weather delays hindered operations such as the Cassino assault due to rain snow and mud.
In Canberra on March 16, Prime Minister John Curtin lauded General Douglas MacArthur for his two year presence in Australia. He praised MacArthur as a devoted leader who inspired Australians and strengthened fighting men and supplies from America.

Ruth Googins Roosevelt filed suit in district court seeking a divorce from Colonel Elliott Roosevelt with custody of three children and a share of community property. The petition cites unkind cruel conduct amid his service in the European theater.
British and American air forces struck Germany with heavy bombers in a coordinated raid. The night campaign hit Stuttgart Munich and other targets with over 1100 four engined bombers carrying more than 3360 tons of bombs. German reports described intense aerial combat amidst snowy skies.
