Portugal debates joining the Atlantic security pact amid objections to Spain's exclusion and base commitments. Lisbon seeks assurances no base obligation, while the U S says the pact frames base decisions. Iceland and Denmark weigh participation as talks wrap with Italy joining anticipated.
Henry Thompson a 31 year old blind native of Ouachita parish who has run candy counters at Monroe city hall and the parish courthouse will move to the state capitol annex building for a similar job. He began at the city hall March 6 1940 and moved to the courthouse December 9 1947. Alvin Segars 32 also blind will replace him at the courthouse stand.
Mrs Vallye Willis returns to The Palace cosmetic department after a postgraduate course at Charles of the Ritz. The ten day program covered powder blending eye care face creams and cosmetics. She received her diploma Friday March 11 joining 10 graduates from across the country and offers complimentary personal consultations to locals.
Three Jackson men died when their plane crashed into Conecuh river swamp ten miles from Andalusia airport after refueling following an air show in Daytona Beach. Pilot Richard O. Black 30, passenger William R. Bunyard 33, and Robert W. Praytor 27 were killed. Orville J. Winover of the Civil Aeronautics Administration examined the wreckage and said the cause is not yet known. A second examination with a Civil Aeronautics Board representative was planned.
In Oklahoma City on March 16, dry advocates push a 15 percent tax on bootleg whiskey as a legislative tactic amid battles over a repeal election. Tulsa Rep Richard Oliver proposed the levy as the house committee delayed action on his measure while the senate killed other repeal proposals.
Funeral services for Elec C Thompson 69 of 808 North Fourth Street will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Ernest Holloway presiding. Interment in Riverview Cemetery. Thompson a native of Iowa came to Monroe in 1927 and worked with Monroe Building and Loan for eight years, previously with Rock Island Railway in Little Rock and later in Florida real estate. He is survived by his wife Louise Saunders Thompson a sister Rebecca Thompson Denver and a brother Dr C A Thompson Kentucky. Pallbearers named are Bob Semmes Reynolds McWilliams Noel Roddey Wheeler Mitchell William Thurman Frank William Herbert P Smith and C B Moffett.
The Layman's League of the First Christian Church held a Monday night meeting in the church annex with a luncheon and elected E. H. Williams as president J. M. Ford as vice president and G. R. Stephenson as secretary and treasurer for the coming year. Outgoing officers were B. B. Martin Arthur Kite and Victor David. The group will meet monthly on the second Monday.
L. A. Sturdivant age 21 of Delhi was arrested by Monroe police just before 3 am Wednesday for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. He was jailed in default of a $300 bond.
