Washington orders cross border action to clear bandits as U S soldiers move into territory to pursue suspected oup bandit groups. Local authorities coordinate with federal forces to restore order and secure border areas.
President Wilson ordered American troops to pursue and kill Villa and his band after a Columbus raid on New Mexico. Major General Scott said a Mexican expedition would number no less than five thousand and would operate near the border as a punitive measure. The navy may deploy parts of the Atlantic fleet if Carranza cannot protect Americans, while talks of broader intervention and recruitment proposals circulate in Congress.
Washington reports outline a planned pursuit of Pancho Villa with border concentrations and possible cross border action. General Funston to command unless overridden, and negotiations with Carranza for permission to pursue bandits continue. Aimed at restoring order with caution to sovereignty, amid calls for a direct armed response.
Columbus reports a rising number of Federal troops patrolling the Mexican border after Villa and his main band were seen fifteen miles south of the line following a running clash with pursuers. Chicago March 9 report that about 400000 engineers firemen conductors and trainmen on American railroads overwhelmingly backed union heads negotiating with railroads for an eight hour day.
Paris announces a brief lull in the Verdun fighting as the German assault pauses on both banks of the Meuse amid continued artillery bombardment. Paris denies German claims of capturing Vaux fort and the village, saying the fort was not attacked and the village held. Signs of renewed action appear on the eastern front with small engagements between Russians and Germans.
A civic note celebrates the new White Way lighting in Monroe with sheds to be torn down to enhance the glow. Merchants and property owners are urged to remove remaining sheds before Saturday night when lights go on, to preserve the improved appearance.
United States senator Randell plans a week in the state for party support. He will meet local leaders and attend events to bolster campaign efforts across the district.
A Shreveport Times dispatch details Louisiana Democratic campaign efforts for Colonel Pleasant. Senator Joseph E. Ransdell plans eight speeches March 13–19 across seven Third district parishes plus Arcadia, aided by Thomas Barret. Parker countered with a two-day Rapides tour and campaign stops in Elton, Welsh, Lake Arthur, Donaldsonville, and other towns. Avoyelles Democrats appoint delegates to the May state convention, pledging strong turnout for the April election.
Election notes suggest Progressives may fail to gain traction in the parish as the Democratic committee implores all Democrats to vote in large numbers to erase any hint of a significant Progressive influence.
Havre dispatch reports the French steamer Louisiana, outbound from New Orleans February 11, was sunk last night. All crew members were saved. It is believed a submarine caused the loss along the French coast.
The Columbia high school girls and boys basketball teams will face City High School teams on the city school grounds Saturday afternoon. Both girls and boys squads have been strengthened and local fans can expect two fast games.
The recently elected Parish Democratic Executive Committee will meet at the courthouse at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning to organize by electing a chairman and secretary. After organizing, plans for a vigorous parish campaign for Democratic nominees will be discussed and nonmembers are invited to attend for consultation.
In Clinton Louisiana on March 10 1924 Dr Clarence Pierson superintendent and former assistant Dr O P Daly of the Jackson Insane Asylum and Times Picayune manager Daniel D Moore and special correspondent William J Leppert were indicted by the Host Feliciana grand jury. Pierson and Daly face assault with a dangerous weapon over the alleged skin grafting on Fannie Gestner a 17 year old patient. Moore and Leppert face four indictments for criminal libel and one additional indictment for slander on the streets of Jackson.
The Associated Charities in Monroe outlines a broader, non relief based mission. It will serve as a center for church and agency coordination, maintain a confidential registration bureau, thoroughly investigate relief cases, provide visitors for counsel, secure funds for relief, and seek work for those able to be self supporting, marking the start of a second year of organized effort.
