He says he urged Wallace to deny authorship, failed to meet, and plans to reveal contents about Wallace's links to Roerich and occult symbolism. J R White, Monroe resident for 28 years and contractor in northeast Louisiana, declared he will run for commissioner of streets and parks in the upcoming Democratic primary. Eamon de Valera, former Ireland prime minister, told reporters in New York that the United Nations amounts to little and that the world is racing toward a third world war. He criticized the League of Nations and called for cooperation among nations to pursue peace. The New York born leader arrived for a tour of American cities and was to be honored at a city hall reception.
The House appropriations committee called for abolition of political patronage in selecting federal tax collectors while trimming 1.7 percent from the president’s requested funding for the Treasury and Post Office departments. It left out the tax refunds appropriation and cited internal revenue inefficiency, noting a case of $304,000 in unpaid taxes.
Homer J. French 36 a Ouachita Parish man announces candidacy for commissioner of streets and parks. Born and educated in the parish he worked two years in Monroe street department before moving to the insurance business and later entered the armed service.
In New Orleans on March 9 two year old Charles Butch Gaebern climbed the side of a four story downtown store building. He found a fire escape after getting separated from his aunt and was rescued by a spectator and a policeman. His aunt fainted at the news and his father said the boy likes to climb and should be “tough.”
Delegates from Britain France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg approve seven articles of a proposed anti communist pact with two articles awaiting Franco British sanction. US stands aside while talks aim to sign economic clauses by week end and five foreign ministers to seal the pact soon.
In Concord New Hampshire March 9 Gov. Thomas E Dewey and Harold E Stassen led the Republican presidential primary with eight delegates at stake. Prospective delegates indicated they would back Sen. Arthur H Vandenberg as a second choice if needed. Up to 55000 voters were expected in clear weather as MacArthur looms in Wisconsin.
Mrs Frances L Curtis 25 of Baton Rouge is indicted for murder in the disappearance of her 17 month old daughter in Port Allen Louisiana. Deputies say she admitted drowning the child in the Mississippi River on February 29 and attempted suicide to prevent her husband from leaving her. A related case of alleged attempted kidnapping of a five year old girl was carried over to the next grand jury session.
The Louisiana School Board Association adopted a unanimous resolution at its convention calling for a constitutional amendment to have the state superintendent of education chosen by the state board of education rather than elected. The measure aims to remove politics from the office and allow full focus on educational development. Shelby M. Jackson remains the superintendent designate.
R M Troy outlined a detailed spending breakdown showing seventy cents of every dollar remains in Ouachita parish. He cited eighty point five three percent to armed forces and families, two point five two percent overhead, with allocations across emergency relief, health, first aid, public relations, and other services.
Over $600 in currency was dumped from a car driven by Purvis Watt after he was stopped for running a red light. Police recovered the luggage and clothes later and returned them to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Thibodeaux of Minden, who reported the theft. Watt was booked for theft of $600 plus $20 in clothing and sent to parish jail for district court trial.
