A historical critique claims the National Maritime Union uses a staged officer election to bar loyal American sailors while widening access for foreign and Communist candidates. It argues restrictive sea service rules and citizenship filing give Communist and fifth-column figures undue power at the expense of young, selfless sailors.
The fifth annual convention of the State Fire Fighters Association of Louisiana ended today at the Virginia hotel with civil service machinery as the main topic. J B Roberts of Baton Rouge read a Municipal Firemen and Police Civil Service law to be proposed at the state legislature. Lamar Polk of Alexandria spoke on civil service benefits, along with Willard E Parker and Charles B Fenner Jr. The election of officers for the year will follow, concluding the gathering attended by delegates from nearly all Louisiana towns with fire departments.
U S Eighth air force bombed Berlin for the fourth time in six days with Fortresses and Liberators, escorted by fighters. The strikes damaged Erkner ballbearing and torpedo part plants as U S and Allied crews claimed 259 Nazi planes shot down in two big attacks, with bomber losses and fighter losses noted.
Coast guard bases report an apparent hoax sent 14 boats from six ports to search for four men adrift after a tanker foundering. After eight hours in 15 degree weather the hunt was called off with two boats remaining. The Civil Air Patrol denied involvement and no CAP official confirmed the alert.
Finnish replies to Soviet armistice demands signal readiness to accept most terms, but refuse to withdraw to the 1940 border or intern German troops. Soviet and German fighting lines surge toward Proskurov as Staro-Konstantinov and Cherni-Ostrov change hands amid heavy mud and renewed assaults.
Secretary of War Stimson announced at a news conference that total American war casualties reach 162 282 through February 23. Army totals show 121 458 casualties with 20 592 dead and 27 222 prisoners, while navy and marine/coast guard totals stand at 40 824 with 17 261 killed and 9 239 missing.
Conservation Commissioner McHugh said he received a letter from Major General Claire Chennault stating open season on Japanese in all theaters. Chennault praised the badge sent by McHugh making him a conservation agent and wished good hunting, noting he leads the 14th Air Force in China.
Allied headquarters report 9000 German casualties in and around Cassino since January, raising Italy’s enemy losses to about 40000 for that period. The communique notes 1500 Germans captured and two minor German thrusts repulsed near the American beachhead southeast of Cassino.
Prime Minister Churchill said the disposal of enemy or ex enemy fleets should wait until war’s end. He confirmed Roosevelt’s note that reinforcements for the Soviet navy are being considered from Anglo American or Italian sources. In Ouachita parish only about a quarter of the $80,000 Red Cross quota is raised by Wednesday night. Organizers note last year’s $40,000 rush, urge public urgency, and call on residents to donate more to support the 5,000 local armed service members and the broader relief effort.
Governor Sam H. Jones called on all Louisianans to endorse their gasoline ration coupons to curb the black market and protect the war effort. The drive reported 48 summonses in Baton Rouge, 15 in New Orleans, with other parishes issuing 16 in Lafayette, 11 in Crowley, and smaller counts in Alexia, Opelousas, Amite, Eunice, and Melville.
Navy Secretary Knox told the House foreign committee that allied offensives are near and will dwarf all previous thrusts. He urged a three year extension of lend-lease, noting massive transfers of ships and aircraft and the ongoing support to Britain, Brazil, Cuba, and French forces.
Wendell Willkie addressed the New Hampshire Good Roads association in Concord as the 1940 Republican candidate. He urged abandoning narrow nationalism and boosting cooperative international efforts while criticizing split views on postwar policy ahead of New Hampshire's pivotal primary. He warned the nation hesitates over postwar problems and warned against nostalgia for prewar freedoms.
The Senate postponed action on the servicemen absentee vote bill after Senator Connally of Texas said he would not bring it up until Monday. He expects passage with little difficulty once it comes to a vote. The revised bill emphasizes state balloting and air mail handling where feasible.
The United States Navy reported 16 more Japanese vessels sunk or damaged by submarines in enemy waters, bringing total losses to 627. The haul included a large tanker and five transports plus ten cargo ships, supporting bases across the Pacific. Admiral Nimitz said shipping shortages may soon bottleneck Japan’s war effort.
President Roosevelt's aides pressed to mend rift with Congress over the tax bill as wartime price controls loom. Vinson Bowles and Jones visited Capitol Hill while Morgenthau met with Doughton and George. O Mahoney invited senators to a party luncheon as Daniels and Fly agreed to testify and cooperate respectively. A partisan fight over extending price controls beyond June 30 appears likely.
