Shreveport La March 8 A auto bus was struck at a grade crossing in Arcadia by an Illinois Central passenger train killing Miss Helen Marie Wilks English teacher at Arcadia High School instantly. Four Arcadia students Jack Tyler Betty Phipps James Otson and June Wade were injured, Tyler in critical condition.
Dean M. Gillespie 59, a truck dealer and oil man, defeats Mayor Carl E. Wuertele 38,440 to 41,418 in Denver's special election to fill the late Representative Law's seat. Gillespie claims a mandate against the Democratic New Deal era and pledges support for American ideals and institutions. Wuertele, a wounded World War II veteran, concedes hours after polls close.
The liner Gripsholm 18134 ton vessel will dock in Jersey City about 9 am Wednesday March 15 after arriving New York harbor late Tuesday. Repatriates to pass through the pier during a 48 hour disembarkation period with meetings arranged through the American Red Cross.

Unofficial returns from secretary of state show nominees for eight state senate seats and twenty six house seats decided in the February 29 second Democratic primary. Among 139 nominated lawmakers, 68 are current members, with 19 of 39 senators and 47 of 100 house members returning. Names include William J. Gruber, Lionel G. Ott, Leonard C. Wise, Gilbert F. Hennigan, Eugene B. Watson and others in respective districts.
Washington March 8 A Senate agriculture subcommittee abandoned plans to cite Presidential Assistant Jonathan Daniels for contempt after he answered questions about unsuccessful efforts to oust Harry Slattery as rural electrification administrator. The panel may close the Daniels case while continuing to probe White House involvement in Slattery’s resignation attempts.
