Four killed and extensive damage blamed on a tornado that ripped through Mississippi Arkansas and Louisiana last night. Creeks and rivers rose as the Tombigbee surged ten feet and a village of 200 was wrecked with twenty injured.
Mr and Mrs W E Whitaker of Harris community Claiborne parish were trapped in a single undestroyed room when a tornado demolished their home. Rescuers had to chop through walls to reach them. The couple call their escape miraculous as debris from eight miles away blew into Athens Louisiana.
A tornado swept Adams farm near Kosciuszko Mississippi damaging Gregory village with $50,000 loss per plantation owner John Eldridge. It moved into Harris community near Homer Louisiana killing Vera Gibson and injuring eight. Five tenant houses a residence and a church were demolished. In Boyle Mississippi ten people were hit by debris despite warnings.
Rev. Theo Ahrendt, pastor of Trinity Lutheran in Monroe, has resigned to accept a regular pastorate at Grace Lutheran in Atlanta. His final sermon is Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and he will depart soon after to begin work in Georgia. Interim duties will be filled by Rev. Paul Streuckler at Sunday services in the W. O. W. hall until a church edifice is erected.
Stanton Tennessee March 7 United Press report two Chicago spouses Mr and Mrs James W Gardner both 28 died in a wreck when their car was pulled from seven feet of water in a bar pit eight miles south of Stanton. Investigators believe heavy rain caused loss of control. Letters found in Gardner's pockets indicate a reconciliation after a prior quarrel that led to her stabbing him.
Chief Officer Manning and Captain Fried of the liner America rescued Chief Engineer Frank Battam from the burning Cranford 300 miles south of Cape Race. Manning and 11 seamen boarded a lifeboat, braved heavy seas, and returned Battam to the America using a breeches buoy. Battam sought to reach his critically burned daughter in New Orleans after a dockside fire aboard the U S Seantic.
Buffalo police report an Indian woman, 85, arrested in the death of Mrs. Henri Marchand, wife of artist and Buffalo Museum of Science curator. She admits being present but blames “an older woman of her tribe” for the slaying, which police say involved blows from a sharp weapon and chloroform.
Chicago's rate fell to 12.7 per 100000 in 1929 while Memphis topped the nation at 66.8. New York recorded 425 homicides, Chicago 401. The list of 20 cities with high rates includes Birmingham Atlanta Jacksonville Lexington Kansas City Cincinnati Detroit Evansville Jackson Sacramento Youngstown and others. Eleven cities reported zero homicides in 1929.
Senator William C. Boone of Claiborne parish arrives in Baton Rouge for questioning about a possible $50,000 gift from the highway commission to New Orleans commercial affairs committee. Boone had earlier called the money demanded and used it to attack Gov. Huey P. Long over tax policy.
In St Petersburg on March 7 Babe Ruth and Yankees owner Col Jacob Ruppert held salary talks at Crescent Park clubhouse. Ruth rejected $85 000 for 1930 or $80 000 yearly for two years while offering $85 000 for two years. Ruppert declined.
A cryptic line shows Hambone's Meditations by J P Alley with a note about an undertaker. The odd fragment suggests a satirical or humorous piece referencing black humor or street talk.
Leo Dambinski, 24, shot and killed his wife, 26, mother of three, and Dr J L Curtis, 47, a negro physician, in South Bend Indiana. He surrendered to police claiming jealousy as the motive.
In Clarksdale Mississippi the Carney case went to a jury at noon. Mrs. A K Carney 53 a church worker is accused of beating Miss Maudie Mae Ross a 22 year old stenographer wife of her husband. The defense portrays her as a virtuous mother while prosecutors say the attack was unprovoked and aimed at a working girl.
New Orleans reports the bullet that killed Nicholas Weibelt, a bandit suspect, exonerates him. Weibelt was wounded the day of the American Bakeries robbery and died Tuesday after a hospital injury. Police ballistics expert Maurice O’Neill testified the bullet did not come from any police revolver.
New Orleans. Gov Huey P Long proposed eight bridges costing about 6 1 2 million dollars to be privately financed by Nashville Bridge Co with a state buy back option. The state highway advisory committee declined to examine or approve the plan under current funding.
After a 12 day search two automobile parties ride toward a canyon high in the San Bernardino mountains above Lake Arrowhead where wreckage of a Western Air Express plane was sighted yesterday by aviators Mrs. Juanita Burns and Dudley Steele. The star crossed plane, commanded by James F Doles with co pilot A W Bieber and steward John W Slaton, disappeared during a storm after leaving Kingman Arizona for Los Angeles on February 23.
Anniston March 7 H M Bryant Calhoun county chief field deputy sheriff was wounded in head and neck during an arrest attempt on a burglary suspect. His upper body was peppered with buckshot from a shotgun. Three months earlier Bryant lost his arm in a prohibition raid after shooting and killing Lou Champion alleged distiller.
Monroe will host two conventions Saturday the Fifth District Parent Teacher Association and the North Louisiana Commercial Teachers Association. The P T A session opens at 10 a m in the city school auditorium with Mrs Fagan Cox presiding and Rev L T Hastings delivering invocation. Myrtle Rodgers will give the address of welcome with Mrs M D McConnell of Mangham replying. FE L Neville will speak on a superintendent’s view. A luncheon and recess follow before the program resumes at 2 p m with Mrs L Johnson of Rayville serving as state vice president.
Memphis bulletin reports two more meningitis deaths at Isolation hospital marked as the 24th and 25th victims. one was a Black man and the other J. T. Turner of Brownsville Tennessee. Miss Lucille Jarvis, a local clerk, dies as the 23rd victim. her body sent to Hazlehurst Georgia. Three new cases admitted to Isolation hospital.
In Bastrop on March 7, Joe Winn and Irston Webb were hanged for the July murder of Bob Lee. Winn, 21, was pronounced dead at 2 49 minutes after the trap sprang. Webb died at 9 30 p.m. Both remained calm as officers forced a lane through a crowd of several hundred.
Associated Press reports for Red Thursday about worldwide communist unemployment protests. Four killed and about 200 injured in Europe. roughly 150 injured and 200 arrested in the United States. In New York police clashed as leaders including William Z Foster were arrested. Berlin Halle and other cities saw clashes, injuries, and arrests as police units dispersed demonstrators.
