United Press reports a call issued for a communist demonstration in Chattanooga Birmingham and Atlanta on March 6 linking city events with nationwide observances. The appeal targets all councils of unemployed and trade union unity leagues to participate in a coordinated protest.
Two men and a woman, said by immigration authorities to have been deported from Mexico as communists, were detained on arrival aboard the Edan in New Orleans. They were arrested at the master’s request ahead of a planned Rotterdam voyage. The trio gave names Hanz Windisch Icek Rosenbloom and Tina Moedotti.
In southern industrial centers discussions linked local union efforts with Red Russia. Speakers at recent meetings asserted solidarity with the movement, delivering greetings from Red Russia as part of the drive associated with the broader AFL regional activity.
The agriculture committee urged the Senate to revise the cotton futures act after a sub committee inquiry into the drop in cotton prices. It proposes designating cotton futures exchanges as contract markets and creating a government commission with power to suspend or revoke such designation.
New Orleans March 5 The Louisiana Supreme Court set aside the state law barred paying workers in coupon books. The ruling reinstates the old practice of employees receiving coupon pay redeemable at company stores. The decision was in the case of J L Blake bookkeeper of Louisiana Central Lumber Company who appealed a lower court ruling claiming the law violated contract rights.
The Louisiana Supreme Court handed down multiple decisions. Many cases were affirmed or reversed with remands or annulments. Notable items include Gardiner versus Erskine reversed and remanded, Pizzolato reversed remanded, Adams affirmed, and Blake annulled with discharge.
Fire believed sparked by an explosion last night leveled the Fosterman residence on Jefferson street Jefferson parish with a 3000 dollar loss. The blaze occurred while the family attended the Comus parade in the New Orleans carnival. A man with ablaze clothing ran from the flames but was not located.
Henry Ford told reporters at his Fort Myers winter estate that Congress should focus on adjusting railroad rates and keep the prohibition law unchanged. One hundred fifty four defendants tied to eastern Arkansas liquor law violations were indicted by a federal grand jury. An 18 year old girl Miss Wenoh Odon of Baton Rouge was killed when a auto was struck by a Yazoo and Mississippi Valley train at a crossing in La Place. Three others were injured including Christas Kaleoro and his wife with internal injuries and Miss Margie Wilson with leg injuries. The party was returning to Baton Rouge after Mardi Gras.
In Summersville Tennessee Haywood Stafford 22 a farmer was charged with first degree murder after confessing to killing Lorece Griffin 22 and wounding Frank Burnett 24 in a Moscow grocery store gun battle. Griffin dodged behind an iron stove as Stafford fired from behind a counter. Burnett was shot when he moved toward his hip pocket.
Two local 10 year old boys Wellman Bankston and Vernon Grubbs ran away from Line avenue school to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans. They were found asleep in a Keithville farm house about 15 miles south of Shreveport after a storekeeper's wife reported their disappearance.
At Sawtelle California on March 5 the bodies of Morey Johnson owner of the plane and two young Los Angeles fliers W G Hogge and Jean La Voie were found in the wreckage of an airplane that smashed into a hill on the Will Rogers ranch.
Frost reached inland areas of Dade county with generally light damage across the state. The Miami weather office logged a 44 degree low. Some damage occurred in the Lake Okeechobee winter vegetable area, sparing inland farms.

Monroe shippers headed by Harry J. Fernandez secretary manager of the Monroe Traffic bureau left the city last night and will return late tomorrow according to official word.
In Jackson on March 5 the Mississippi Senate committee began probing the railroad office. Commissioner W R Scott of Starkville faced subpoenas for five bus line associates while Morgan of Hattiesburg and Alexander of Rolling Fork attended but were not summoned. The panel met in executive session and adjourned with secrecy, amid rumors of irregularities in bus operation permits.
Madame Melanie Chaffraix a Paris and New Orleans social leader will take United States citizenship in North Carolina tomorrow. She has wintered in New Orleans and summers in Montjoly Auvergne and entertained distinguished guests in both places. At 83 she is described as tall and stately and one of the last of the old regime in New Orleans society.
Edward Beckwith principal keeper at Auburn prison was stabbed to death today. Beckwith had succeeded George A. Durnford who was killed in the Auburn riot of December 11 last.
In Chicago a dispute over two Pomeranian puppies ends with Judge J H Clayton ruling that Queen Marie may keep her brood, while Pershing’s owner argued for shared ownership. The scene features a light moment as the rivals Yawn.
Newark police raided a Barclay Street temple at dawn. a sergeant and a gunman were killed, a patrolman wounded, and a cult member shot as chants of an African deity filled the building. One cultist named Cokey Joe died while fleeing. Audrey Billups survived after nine bullets and the raid freed no one.
The Ouachita parish police jury approved a plan to have its road committee meet with Monroe Realty board and the tax assessor to discuss taking over maintenance of subdivision streets outside Monroe. Special to The News-Star. Jena March 5. Deputy Sheriff J. N. Gray of Goodpine is in serious condition after a gun struck to the head by Fred Wilson a Negro about 4 am today. Wilson is held in parish jail charged with the crime. It is alleged Wilson was engaged in the assault.
Albert Kilgore, 17, in Bristol Tennessee, was shot dead at his home near Free Hill after being charged with violating age of consent with a 16-year-old girl. His cousin Charles Meade, 21, jailed in Gate City Virginia on murder charges for the fatal wounding.
Washington March 5 former Chief Justice Taft showed slight daily improvement after a poor night. Drs Claytor and Hagner reported he spent a good night but remain critically ill with no change offering hope of recovery and life possibly prolonged for some time.
