AP reports pre-dawn combat as French forces stormed the Casbah in Algiers to quell Moslem gunfire from rooftops. Thousands of troops ringed the native quarter, barriers were set, and civilians sought order amid Ramadan observances. Casualty figures were not released as talks on a cease-fire with the Algerian rebels continued.
In a pre dawn coup in Rangoon Burma General Ne Win toppled Premier U Nu and imprisoned his cabinet after troops battled supporters at the former president Sao Shwe Thaike’s home. The anti communist leader, who ruled since 1958, again assumed supreme authority as the capital remained calm.

In New Orleans an elderly woman, Grace Easton about 80, died and her sister Katie Olsen was seriously injured while crossing Canal Street to church. Richard T. Murray, 28, of Metairie, faces negligent homicide, drunken driving and aggravated injury charges after traveling at least 50 mph. Olsen was hospitalized at Charity. Easton and Olsen were widows sharing a home near N Lopez.
In Camden Arkansas Maud Crawford vanished on a rainy night five years ago. The 60 year old attorney disappeared from a 12 room colonial home after a brief phone call from her cousin. Her purse with $123 remained, clothes and car undisturbed, and husband Clyde Crawford faced questions but remained puzzled.
Cuban exiles in Miami launch Operation Drool by mailing U.S. food sections to friends in Cuba to whet appetites against the Castro regime. Hal Hendrix of the Miami News proposed the tactic, and exiles began with Thursday’s food sections.
Paris faced intensified security as 1000 more armed riot police joined a 31,000-strong force guarding the capital after a wave of terrorist plastic bombs. The OAS claimed attacks in Paris. Clark Cochran bought a general store in Rising Sun Maryland but was robbed three hours later. A pistol was shoved in his ribs as a thief took 125 dollars. Cochran sold the business back to the original owner the next morning, deciding the venture was not for him.
Cambodia granted political asylum to Nouen Van Cu, a 25 year old South Vietnamese fighter pilot who fled to Phnom Penh after attacking Diem’s palace in Saigon. Prince Sihanouk called the act God’s punishment and rejected South Vietnam’s extradition request, deepening already strained ties over border incidents.
Carolyn Glenn 14, daughter of astronaut John H. Glenn Jr., won the ninth grade presidency at Williamsburg Junior High School, outpolling two boys. She was in New York for her father’s ticker tape parade when the result was announced.
The 22nd annual Northeast Livestock Show closed in the early hours with final horse show results announced. Officials praised the four day run but seek state aid in coming years, aid cut off for two years. Horse show set a record with 217 entries led by Grand champion stallion Skipper's Image. Approximately 365 4-H and FFA livestock exhibited. Hereford performances lagged due to herd dispersal. Grand champion stallion Skipper's Image earned by W. G. East German Communist border police barred Maj. Gen. Albert Watson II from entering East Berlin at the Soviet sector's insistence. The ban followed the U.S. restriction on Soviet commandant Solovyev entering West Berlin and heightened East-West tensions amid recent Allied air corridor incidents. The U.S. mission protested Soviet actions while Moscow rejected protests over East Berlin entry controls.
The Senate passed and sent to President Kennedy a bill raising the temporary national debt limit to $300 billion, an increase of $2 billion, by voice vote. Kennedy had requested the hike and plans another $8 billion increase by June 30.

Sal yersville hero John Hank, a 6 foot 215 pound handyman, paddled a motorless boat through five foot flood waters of the Licking River to rescue about 40 people. He and Paul Marshall worked 11 hours pulling victims to safety. County Judge Clyde Salyer praised Hank as the town’s lone capable rescuer.
William H. McKeon, a Cayuga County political figure, was named Democratic state chair man in place of Michael H. Prendergast who was removed amid Kennedy administration and New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner tensions. Prendergast sought a court order to void the removal before the Sept. 6 primaries, arguing his term runs longer. Wagner’s faction backed McKeon, aided by Eleanor Roosevelt and Robert H. Lehman allies, signaling patronage realignment.
