Sketches of Jim Jeffries and Jack Johnson
James J. Jeffries born 1875 in Carroll Ohio became champion after decisive 1899 and 1900 bouts. He retired to a Southern California farm amid Johnson color questions and later trained intensely for a Johnson title clash. Johnson, born 1878 in Galveston, rose through 60 plus bouts, famed for calm temperament and sharp business sense.
