The Senate approved a $1,808,200,000 relief plan after over 14 hours of debate and sent the measure to a conference with the House. The House approved $75,000 for WPA investigations and moved the relief bill toward final enactment before the fiscal year ends.
Lt Robert N Stanley rode a motorless glider to 16 400 feet in 15 minutes above Elmira New York setting a new American altitude record. He rode through a forming thundercloud and reported ice coating and instrument clogging before breaking out at 12 000 feet. He suffered a sore back from the ride and said he did a dozen loops to relax after landing.
A new postal service begins in Monroe on Saturday July 1 with a 9 p.m. pickup from the West Monroe post office and mail chutes in the Ouachita Bank and Bernhardt buildings and downtown hotels. The mail will depart on the southbound Missouri Pacific train at 10:30 p.m. aiding business firms and hotel patrons.
President Roosevelt approved a civil functions appropriation of 305 million dollars for non military war department work including flood control and river harbor improvements. Congress added 50 million to the flood and harbor program with 39 million for the Mississippi basin and 96 million for river and harbor maintenance and new work. The bill also funds Bonneville and Fort Peck dam power projects and initiates Denison dam construction along the Red River, Texas and Oklahoma. Additional allocations cover Philippines, Panama Canal Zone, and Alaska communications.
In Indianapolis June 29 McNutt United States high commissioner to the Philippines and former governor arrives from the islands. He will address Monument Circle from a stand used in Roosevelt's 1936 reelection campaign after a parade and a statehouse reception. The welcome includes a reception for his wife and daughter Louise.
Walter B. Pitkin, Columbia professor of journalism, urges a nationwide league of the middle class to counter graft. He calls for a non political, non sectarian movement aiming to mobilize hard working Americans to act on political and economic reforms. A meeting in Elyria was planned to launch the effort.
Administrator Ickes canceled a $21 600 PWA grant to the University of Georgia for a fraternity house, not a public dormitory, calling the move deception. He ordered return of $7 200 already advanced and cited a separate denied promotion fee tied to L W Robert’s Atlanta firm.
Ray Olson, fugitive killer of two deputy sheriffs, was shot and killed near Cable Wisconsin on Lake Namakagon as he attempted to flee with four possemen led by Constable Ernest Moore. After hours hiding in an Anderson home he cooked a meal before being cornered and fatally wounded by bullets.
Miss Mary Benoit daughter of Mayor H H Benoit and four Monroe girls were injured near New Madrid Missouri while returning from the World’s Fair in New York. Miss Benoit was most seriously hurt and sent to a Memphis hospital. mayor left for Memphis after noon.
Pan American Airways Dixie Clipper continued its inaugural passenger flight from the United States to Europe. The 41 ton flying boat carried 22 passengers plus crew and mail, leaving Port Washington for Horta and Lisbon with a 15 hour 42 minute first leg and a 7 hour second hop planned to Lisbon. The voyage totals 4,650 miles with an expected 40-some hours elapsed time and a Sunday return.
The public conscience is shocked by the resignation and flight of LSU President James Monroe Smith amid WPA funds misuse rumors. The paper demands merciless probing, exposure of criminals, and punishment without harming the innocent, urging investigators to let the chips fall where they may.
Baton Rouge June 29 Authorities expect more startling facts about Louisiana State University finances to emerge at today's university board meeting. Dr. Paul M. Hebert acting president will urge a certified public accountant audit and require two signatures on all university checks. The East Baton Rouge grand jury, now in its second day, probes alleged illegal dealings involving ex president Dr James M. Smith with statements expected after the session.
May 1939 shows broad gains over May 1938 per Chamber of Commerce with postal receipts up 14.9 percent and building permits up 107.1 percent. Telephones rise 6.3 percent, motor vehicle registrations 49.2 percent, freight shipments 92.4 percent, power use 3.3 percent, bank deposits 5.7 percent, and bank debits 12 percent, while manufacturing sales slip 6.8 percent. Private employment up 66.3 percent as job applications fall 70.4 percent. Comparing to April 1939, most increases offset some declines.
The National Safety Council reports 2,330 traffic deaths in May 1939, a 2 percent decline from May 1938, with cities down 11 percent while rural highway deaths rose 4 percent. five months into 1939 totals reach 11,010, a 7 percent drop from the prior year despite higher motor travel.
In Los Angeles June 29 Dorothy Lamour named among Myrl Alderman's women as attorney Bernard Cohen builds list for Alma Alderman versus Ruth Etting. Bartender George Roberts testifies Alderman brought companions to a grotto near studios and kissed Lamour on occasion.
A special Ouachita parish school board session will open bids Friday at 10 a.m. for three projects. The largest is a three story addition to the parish high school on South Grand Street to accommodate more than 2,000 students this fall. Other bids are for a two room Millsaps school addition and a one room Lenwis school addition in West Monroe. Plans were prepared by architect H. H. Land.
Louisiana Attorney General David M. Ellison asks to move the case against Texas Oil to parish district court in Baton Rouge. The state seeks surrender of nine producing wells in Plaquemines Parish and river bottoms plus $1,013,947 for minerals. Texas Oil counters with a federal lease claim.
London reports say Britain proposed Baltic state and Belgium inclusion in a mutual aid pact with France and Russia. Nazi Germany dismisses rumors of a Danzig coup and a free corps, while Danzig residents brace for a possible Reich return amid global anxieties.
Washington reports the agriculture department appropriation bill would outlay 1.194 billion dollars for federal farm expenditures in the coming year. Senator Russell praises the measure as fair and necessary, noting it is larger than last year due to bundling items and includes 725 million for farmer payments under cooperative control programs.
Detroit police report Dr. James Monroe Smith former LSU president and a woman claiming to be Mrs T M Smith bought a new car in Detroit Tuesday night. They arrived after reportedly stopping at a Memphis hotel as J M Southern and booked rail tickets to Detroit via Chicago. They carried six suitcases, three tan and three black.
