A Monroe family recounts fleeing Hurricane Audrey from Orange Texas toward Monroe and DeQuincy, describing the storm’s rapid approach, near misses with toppled trees and power lines, and shelter in a schoolhouse before continuing home as winds peaked.
Hurricane Audrey battered southwest Louisiana with a rising death toll from 200 to 4,000 estimates. Cameron Parish accounted for 87 dead, while officials warned the toll could reach several hundred or more. Rescue crews scoured marshes for missing and survivors as Red Cross sheltered thousands and Coast Guard searched offshore.
City Council approves a 1957 58 budget totaling 2,294,241.39 with general fund revenue of 2,299,092.25. Major expenses include fire 494,218, police 271,302, sanitation 390,250 and utilities pledge 615,600. Utilities and street lights save about 705,000 for residents. A surplus of about 5,000 leads to a tight budget. Also authorized five street paving projects and liquor license consideration for after July 1.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles rejected U S recognition of Communist China while leaving open the possibility of future friendly people to people relations. He dismissed seating Beijing in the United Nations and expanding trade or cultural ties with the Peiping regime.
Hurricane Audrey tore through Lake Providence causing damage but 26 contestants moved into the public eye for the Miss Louisiana pageant. Lighting restoration is planned before tonight’s preliminary at the American Legion Home. Bob Evans of Helena will host with two groups performing tonight and tomorrow. Final selections occur Sunday night with a new Miss Louisiana crowned.
