Monroe residents donate 7274 to the Red Cross district fund surpassing the city apportionment of 5000 and exceeding expectations in Liberty Loan support. Local businesses closed to rally volunteers while contributions from Morehouse parish and Calhoun add to the drive. Women’s efforts and a St Francis Sanita benefit event help push total past 5000 with direct city donations and widespread civic participation.

An overloaded skiff sank off a Perry coast killing six men. Local authorities identify the victims as African American passengers and investigate the fatal boating accident.
Six young negro baseball players aged 17 to 21 drown when a small boat ferrying them back from a ball game sinks in mid stream above the city on the Ouachita River. Reports differ on total aboard, but at least eleven were in the craft before it went down. two swam to safety. The incident prompts police to review the ferryman’s conduct and possible criminal liability.
A nine year old known as Knockout drowned Sunday afternoon at a point on the Ouachita river opposite Glenders plantation in Ward. The boy had been staying with Mr and Mrs W C Barringer and was sent to a logging camp run by C E Maroney. While Maroney was away the foreman left and the boy went to bathe, entered the river and was drowned. His body was recovered.

A Black man accused of terrorizing a white woman was seized from jail by a small mob and killed near Galveston Texas on June 25. The incident followed an overpowered jailer amid rising tensions in the area.
