Negro Methodists Reject Invitation Shreveport Verdict
In Shreveport the Central Jurisdiction Negro delegates voted down a resolution to remove racial barriers in the Methodist Church. East of the Mississippi the vote was nearly unanimous against the plan, delaying integration steps and affecting regional merger talk with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The rejection split the church’s jurisdictions, with North Central Northeast and Western accepting Negro conferences, while South Central and Southeastern remained segregated. The vote came as leaders weigh authority of the November 1966 General Conference to act further.

Long Issues Statement On Bill's Defeat
Sen Russell Long issued a detailed statement after his amendments to restrict Medicare style benefits for the elderly were rejected by the Senate Finance Committee on Capitol Hill. He argued the panel shifted from earlier approval and warned the bill risks a reverse share the wealth effect while limiting care after about six months. He said Democrats and labor interests influenced the vote but pledged to press the fight to ensure federal health insurance covers elderly patients as long as needed.
