Redistricting Bill For State Senate Floor Vote
Baton Rouge Senator Jules Mollere announced plans to bring his redistricting bill to a floor vote Thursday. The Senate adjourned to 9 a.m. Thursday after a brief session, while three similar measures in committee faced one killed and two postponed. Mollere’s plan would keep 39 members but redraw districts, affecting his Jefferson, St. John, and St. Charles Parishes area and including parts of Orleans Ninth Ward, East Baton Rouge, and Caddo Parishes. He cited the Supreme Court’s one person one vote ruling and the constitution’s requires redistricting within a year of House reapportionment. Governor McKeithen favored delaying redistricting during this session, with a special session possible later to fund a teacher pay raise. In other business, the Senate Finance Committee heard requests from Civil Defense, Wildlife and Fisheries, and the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Commission for budget increases totaling about $655,600 as part of the $572.4 million general appropriations bill, with a vote expected next Wednesday.
