Ringworm Study Among London Schoolboys Reveals Transmission
London dermatologists studied 400 boys aged 13 to 18 in boarding houses. Among 271 with toe skin abnormalities only half were fungal. microscopic tests on toe scrapings proved essential before diagnosing ringworm. Visible fungi appeared in 123 old students and 3 new ones, with 18 boys harboring fungi despite no lesions. Six months later 16 of 18 showed early ringworm signs. Fungi persisted on skin and spread via barefoot contact on wet floors, especially showers and pools. Treatments varied with undecylenic acid aerosol leading at 87.8 percent, Whitfield’s ointment 86.5 percent, Teoquil gel and powder lagging. Prevention advised thorough drying after bathing, salicylic acid powder, and slippers to avoid wet floors.
