London and Bonn reports detail eight new charges against Dr Stephen Ward a Profumo scandal figure as bail is denied and he returns to jail ahead of a Friday hearing. The case centers on alleged procuring of a woman identified as Miss X and instructing a crime related to abortion.
Byron de La Beckwith, 42, a Greenwood, Mississippi salesman, is jailed in Jackson charged with murder in the Medgar Evers case. FBI ties gun prints and telescopic sights to Beckwith and to a Grenada dealer. “others unknown” face federal conspiracy counts. If convicted, Beckwith faces the death penalty.
Local law enforcement agencies gather for the Louisiana Peace Officers Association convention in Shreveport. Pistol teams include Monroe and West Monroe police, Ouachita Parish sheriff’s department, and Troop F Louisiana state police with members named.
The Associated Press reports six people were killed in Louisiana traffic crashes over the weekend. In Blanchard a car truck crash killed three, including 3 year old Ervin Nix Jr who died in Shreveport hospital. The Reed child was the daughter of Mr and Mrs F Reed of Ashland Kansas. A grandmother Ruth Adkinson was critically injured. Elbert Jack on Jr 31 was charged with negligent homicide. John C Nugent 31 of Denham Springs died in a two car crash on Highway 167 near Alexandria. George Turner Dry Prong was charged with negligent homicide and hospitalized. Alfred Ross 84 was killed on Highway 568 near Ferriday. James Wynn 31 of Columbus Georgia was killed by a switch engine in New Orleans railroad yards.
A Gaston North Carolina fireman traveling through West Monroe spotted a fire on the DeMoin Motel roof at 00 Cypress Street. He acted immediately to bring the blaze under control, and by the time local firefighters arrived, the fire was extinguished. Craig commented as a fireman.
Jimmie Howard of Rushton, member of the Fifth District Highway Board, says Louisiana is leading the nation in interstate and civil defense highway construction. Four interstates totaling 868 miles are under way, including I 26, I 10, I 12, and I 55. Current progress suggests I 20 will be the first completed, with work from Monroe to the Texas line within a year.
Pope Paul VI said he would do everything possible to promote international peace based on truth justice love and freedom and urged cordial relations between the Vatican and every country. Maurice Rimpo editor of the Cambridge Daily Banner said Negroes were boycotting the newspaper over its racial coverage. The United States rejected a Soviet proposal to establish a nuclear-free zone in theMediterranean arguing such a move would weaken the United States and its allies.
The longtime head of minor league baseball, George M. Trautman, died at his Columbus home after a period of heart illness. He had led the minors since 1947 and was commonly known as the boss of the bushes. In Bonn, President Kennedy said he will not attend Pope Paul VI’s coronation in Rome on Sunday.
Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon attacks the $45 billion foreign aid bill, accusing Defense Department officials of relying on weak allies. He questions aid to Turkey Taiwan and Pakistan, calls Diem regime in South Vietnam dangerous, says even with aid these dictators cannot defend themselves and the U.S. bears ill will.

Torrance ARRESTS 23 RACISM sit in at a housing tract sales office after a citizen's complaint. Church leaders from 16 denominations call for redress in housing employment and education amid a regional racial crisis.
The Weather Bureau predicts above normal rainfall through the five day period with most of the north half of Mississippi and the Louisiana Delta showing adequate soil moisture from recent showers. Calhoun had a 1.25 inch downpour while Monroe reported no measurable rainfall. Highs and lows range from 190 to 94 with overnight 72 and 70 to 74 expected.
Louisiana lawmakers await word on possible new sessions to redraw Senate districts amid population shifts. Gov Davis signed an emergency act reseating the House within constitutional limits after 105 seats, as lawsuits eyed the act’s constitutionality. The Monroe City Council will open bids Tuesday at 10 am for the Standifer Avenue pumping station and a 46 inch force main as the first phase of a $3,250,000 sewer treatment program. The project aims to build a plant south of Monroe to treat sewage before discharging into the Ouachita River with two additional phases planned. City voters approved $2,650,000 for the project and a $600,000 federal grant will aid via the Louisiana Department of Health.
New Orleans police say two young men admitted their part in a hold up and shooting of Norris J. Rabs as he drove a New Orleans bus last week. Daryl Evans 16 Bernard Butler 16 and Eugene Samuels 19, all of New Orleans, were booked after their admissions.
