Governors discuss federal aid and state cost control
Freshman Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois urged economy at all levels and cautioned against seeking more federal funds before states straighten their own finances. At the 41st Governors Conference, leaders debated cutting federal aid by 20 percent and funding gaps through state taxes while Iowa, California, and New York officials pressed for more state control and broader health and education programs. Lane urged action on highway safety as part of state responsibility. A closing note mentions a banana with a large single fruit, as long as a man’s arm.
