The second day of the national convention opened with the session called to order by Chairman Root. Delegates discussed team roller methods and related topics, aiming to set policy directions and standards for the movement.
The Chicago convention opened with Rabbi Stolz prayer as delegates clashed over seating 92 contested delegates. Taft and Roosevelt factions clashed. a recess followed a near fight while Roosevelt plans remained at large and bribery charges drew congressional interest.
At the Chicago Republican National Convention the second day centers on possible Taft renomination Roosevelt nomination or a new third candidate. Taft leaders push for Taft, Roosevelt backers push for Roosevelt, while a second convention or delayed roll calls loom as debates proceed this afternoon and into tonight. Committees to be appointed, rules may be reported, and tomorrow the convention gears up for business.
At Chicago on June 18 the Taft faction won the first ballot in the Republican convention electing Senator Elihu Root of New York as temporary chairman by 558 to 502 over Governor Francis E. McGovern of Wisconsin. Temporary officers named include Chairman Root and a slate of secretaries, assistant secretaries, sergeants at arms, and a chief doorkeeper for the convention.
Chicago June 19 The Republican Convention roared in support of Governor Hadley as Taft backers urged credentials action. Hadley pledged to refer the resolution to the credentials committee without bias, while delegates shouted for Roosevelt and chanted for the former New Jersey West Virginia and Ohio supporters.
Dave Moore a white tie maker and W C Cole a black section foreman on the Monroe and Southwestern Railroad fought with rifles and a shotgun over disputed ties. Both were arrested by Deputy Sheriffs Grant and Pettit and placed in parish jail without bond.
President Taft may block this year s encampments by vetoing the army appropriation bill. States from Florida to Louisiana planned July 5 maneuvers and a message to Congress is sought to secure needed funds. Baltimore sold pitcher Bob Grant to Allentown and shortstop Ray Cameron to Hamilton in Canada League.
Maryland figures join tribute to Dr Forsythe with lists of officials and clerks. The roster includes Chief Usher William B Austin of Illinois and Dr George C Hunt of Illinois, along with chaplains, stenographers, clerks, and tally clerks from multiple states.
A stream of telegrams and messages pour in from fans and officials in Baton Rouge to honor celebrants at the local prom, recognizing achievements and community support. The notes highlight pride, goodwill, and continued local spirit.
The June speech notes a strong approval tide for Mayor Forsythe after his allies beat back the Bryant Monroe charter bill changes in the Senate. Officials from Monroe and West Monroe sent congratulatory telegrams as Forsythe and Hood defend municipal government by commission against broad opposition.
