Louisiana plans to recruit nurses from Canada to fill growing hospital vacancies. The NBA and ABA merge, with the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls seen as major beneficiaries from the deal.

A roof collapse at the Union Oil of California office in Lafayette killed one construction worker and injured about six others. The dead man’s name was not released. Crews had lifted the roof to add a second story when front columns failed and the structure broke apart.
