Insurance Commissioner Bill Defeated in House Committee
Louisiana House Insurance Committee defeated Rep. James Smith’s bill to abolish governor appointed insurance commissioners and make the chief answerable to the people. The bill cited rising auto insurance rates, with 1965 increases of 14 percent and 1966 early boosts of 24 percent, totaling a 40 percent rise in 18 months. Critics noted high system costs and questioned the service levels of smaller carriers, while supporters argued the need for rate oversight by an elected official.
