Supreme Court Expands Civil Rights in Housing Rulings
The Supreme Court ruled that a long obscure civil rights law bans racial discrimination in housing sales and rentals, declaring the 1866 act a relic of slavery and applicable to private actions. The decision, joined by most of the court, signals strong rights protection and expands enforcement without exceptions, while other rulings limited welfare rules, permitted anti-drunk policing, and allowed CATV rebroadcasts of films without payment.
