The House passed a compromise measure to repeal most federal excise taxes and spur price cuts on autos, cosmetics, and other goods. The vote was by voice with minimal debate.
Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri appealed at a Commonwealth luncheon for the United States to stop bombing North Viet Nam to help start peace negotiations. He urged a pause from Hanoi and warned force cannot solve the conflict. Britain’s Harold Wilson defended the bombing as aiding supply routes to the Viet Cong.
U S Navy Phantoms shot down two Communist MIG 17s near Hanoi as US warplanes escorted missions north of Thanh Hoa. In Santo Domingo, an American paratrooper died and seven soldiers were wounded during nine hours of fighting with Dominican rebels.
President Johnson awards Exceptional Service Medals to Gemini astronauts James A. McDivitt and Edward H. White II in the White House rose garden for closing the manned space flight gap with the Soviet Union. He praises peaceful space cooperation and invites the astronauts to supper. The ceremony is attended by top officials including Chief Justice Warren and Defense Secretary McNamara.
Postmaster Homer B. Roark was re-elected secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana chapter of the National Association of Postmasters during the Baton Rouge meeting. Hannah Cunningham of Metairie was chosen as president with a slate of new officers named for various post office classes.

Twin Cities seaman Paul H Freeman on leave from the U S Navy spends June visiting his family Mr and Mrs FH d Freeman at 1120 N 3rd St and friends in Monroe. Stationed in California he has served a year of Navy time including some in Vietnam after attending Ouachita Parish High School.

U S senator Barry Goldwater announced the formation of the Free Society Association to promote conservatism and research the nation’s Constitution. He will be honorary chairman and said the group will not run candidates or engage in third party politics. The association plans reports like The New Federalist Papers and will use books, radio, and TV to advance its mission.
In Georgia Republicans and Negroes win historic gains in the state House, with Republicans taking 17 of 47 contested seats and Negroes capturing eight seats including a notable victory by Albert W. Thompson in Muscogee County. Thompson vows to serve Muskogee County well in Atlanta.
The House Appropriations Committee endorsed four billion two hundred forty one million six hundred thirty six thousand five hundred dollars for the government public works programs for the next fiscal year. The allocation trails President Johnsons request by one hundred thirty two million one hundred sixty eight thousand five hundred dollars, with the Atomic Energy Commission receiving the largest cut. The AEC was granted two billion three hundred fifty four million nine hundred ninety five thousand dollars of the two billion four hundred eighty one million dollars it sought.
A Houston truck driver Otis H. Armstrong 40 was killed when a load of oil field pipe shifted on a highway near New Iberia Louisiana. The 10 000 pounds of pipe caused the cab to sever and the truck to catch fire destroying the vehicle. The pipe belonged to Hugh Tool Co of Houston.
Partly cloudy skies forecast for the Twin Cities through Saturday. Monroe area expected 80 percent sunshine today and Friday with no rain forecast. Highs around 84 to 96, lows near 66 to 70. Wednesday’s high 90 and overnight low 68. No rainfall recorded. winds variable to northeast 5 to 15 mph.
A strike bound freighter laden with U S military cargo for Greece and Turkey lay at a Brooklyn anchorage unable to sail without engineers. Attleboro Victory idled by a widening Atlantic and Gulf Coast strike of ships' officers. She was to depart Wednesday from the Brooklyn Army Terminal but five engineers refused to sign for the voyage. Tugs moved the freighter from pier to anchorage. In past disputes maritime unions often exempt military shipments from strikes.
BATON ROUGE AP The Education Committee of the state Board of Education took under advisement recommendations from a citizens committee. Proposals would raise teacher certification standards requiring 60 semester hours of general education and 30 hours of subject matter for elementary teachers plus 90 hours of general and current professional education for high school teachers. CABL proposals also urge review of terminal education below four years. Charles Keller New Orleans presented CABL study aims for educational programs guiding terminal paths into jobs.
