Crew Tried to Avert Fatal Crossing Crash Near Riverton

Four investigators concluded the Missouri Pacific train 6509 did all it could to prevent a grade crossing collision that killed J. M. Williams, 36, of Monroe. Williams, attempting to move a stalled truck off the tracks, was struck two miles north of Riverton. The hearing found proper lookout, whistle and bell signals, with Williams likely aware of the oncoming train but unable to escape. Dust from highway traffic partly obstructed the engineer's view.
