Sentences ranging from 18 months to 20 years were approved for conscientious objectors who refused military service at Camp Upton and Camp Gordon. Secretary Baker supported sending such men to countries of their preference after the war, noting many objectors have relatives in Germany and Austria.
Personal clash between T T Webb representative and W Smith president of Newsar Publishing followed an editorial on a bill. Occurred at Desiar and North Second streets. No serious injuries. Webb toppled and both men were released after officers processed the incident.

Ed. Smith of Longview Texas reported to police the loss of four diamond rings valued at 1125 as he slept in a boarding house. Three white men were said to have entered the room and were arrested for investigation. Police traced Smith’s prior diamond holdings, linked to a divorce settlement with his former wife.
War savings campaign headquarters will host a meeting of the campaign war council this afternoon to oppose the flying squadron and plan the formation of a limit club in the west side wards. The club will be open to those who contribute at least $1,000 in war savings stamps.

Washington June 17 Senator Chamberlain chairman of the Senate Military Committee endorsed General Crowder's plan to extend the army draft to ages 18 to 45. He voiced support in a statement highlighting the need for broader conscription to bolster military manpower.
A 25 mile dry zone bill heads into effect July 5 following an address by Dr. M. M. Lyon Indiana evangelist at a Jackson street tabernacle. Attendees heard his sermon The Battle With Booze as resolutions support the national prohibition amendment and the Cooper dry zone bill.
Routing of 161 Ouachita negro selectmen leaving Monroe for Camp Funston Kansas on Wednesday June 19th has been received. They report to the local board at 10 a.m. and depart at 5 p.m. by a Missouri Pacific special train. A reception for the leaving group will be held at Zion Traveler Baptist Church.
Elizabeth Howard almost two, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W G Howard of 217 Sixth Street, died Saturday night after swallowing tonic contents of iron quinine and strychnine. She was found with the bottle and some poured on her clothing. a physician arrived too late. Remains are to be buried near Lumberton, Mississippi.
Parish Food Administrator J. P. Parker displayed three sales slips from grocery stores alleging state of three quart bottles of olive oil sold at varied prices. One slip shows 1.50 another 1.25 and a third 1.00.
War Department revokes orders appointing Major General Leonard Wood to command the Western Department and reassigns him to Camp Funston. Announcement made in Washington.
A large group of business and professional men gathered at the Chamber of Commerce this morning to oppose passage of the proposed bill requiring two operatives on the car. The meeting focused on arguing against the two-man car requirement and urged lawmakers to reject the legislation.
Babies of Ouachita parish will be weighed and measured during the week starting June 24. Weighing stations will be set up in every ward, with Mrs. J. C. Sadler in charge. Mothers receive a record of their babies’ exact weights and measurements and a copy goes to Washington as part of a government health initiative.
A shooting at Holly Grove church near Columbia Louisiana left Blanchard Warner dead and Gen Smith wounded as seven Black men were jailed. Sheriff J K McClanahan said tensions rose during a War-savings meeting at the church and a potential lynching loomed as several suspects confessed to the killing or aiding it.
The Children’s Year program with the Children’s Bureau and the woman’s committee of the Council of National Defense plans weigh and measure for children five and under. Alexandria Louisiana June 17 five hundred men from Alexandria and Rapides parish pledged to prevent blind tigers and bootleggers from operating in the city and parish under the Grundy coop provisions.
