Tax Assessors On Coast Convicted
SAN FRANCISCO AP Four tax assessors have been convicted and 14 others face charges in a multimillion dollar tax scandal in California and Washington. San Francisco Assessor Russell L. Wolden, 55, was found guilty on eight counts of bribery and one count of conspiracy. He faces up to 126 years in prison on appeal. The case began after files were lifted from tax consultant James C Tooke’s office and included canceled checks paid to top officials. Other officials in King County Seattle and Alameda County were sentenced or awaiting trial. A 76 year old Portland tax consultant was indicted for bribery, while Alameda County’s Donald Feragen was convicted of eight bribery counts and sentenced to 2 to 14 years. The attorney general’s office pursued refunds and reforms, and California lawmakers moved toward uniform assessment rates.
