Four people died in three separate crashes near Monroe today. One fatality occurred on the New Natchitoches Road West Ouachita Parish when a car driven by Carmen G Patrick of West Monroe crossed the center line and collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. The dead driver’s name was withheld pending notification of kin. State Trooper Larry Ledford said charges probably forthcoming.
The Monroe Commission votes to end the contract with Disposal Systems Inc. a Browning Ferris subsidiary for city commercial garbage collection. The city will end exclusive handling June 30 and allow businesses to contract with any hauler, while city pickups remain limited to residents and small businesses.
Striking black students in Soweto stoned riot police autos buses and private cars in the month’s worst violence amid pre anniversary tensions. Police report Orlando high school youths threw stones from school walls at passing traffic as security forces moved to quell the unrest.
Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards testified under oath that his wife accepted ten thousand dollars from Korean rice dealer Tongsun Park in 1971 after he refused the gift. He said Park had no direct Korean government link and he would do it again under the same circumstances.
A House committee backed continuing the Clinch River breeder reactor project with a 19-11 vote and approved 150 million dollars to begin construction near Oak Ridge Tennessee. The panel rejected an amendment to end the project. Meanwhile the Senate debates natural gas deregulation as Republicans push to restore funds and studies question overestimates of plant switches from coal.
