James Earl Ray the confessed King killer was captured hiding under leaves in the Cumberland foothills ending a 54 hour escape. Fellow convict Donald Ray Caylor was arrested later. Donald Shelton remained at large as investigators pursued the fugitives near Oak Ridge and a gold mining camp.

The town now must implement five districts after earlier mixed plans were rejected. Whites 50.5 percent, blacks 49.5 percent of the electorate.
New York AP reports a mixed session as the Dow Jones industrial average softens from an early gain. By noon the Dow stood near 910.70, down 0.09, with gainers leading decliners 3 to 2 among NYSE stocks. Analysts linked strength to hints that interest rates may be stabilizing.
Monroe residents will face higher gas bills next cycle as fuel adjustment charges rise to 1.76 dollars per thousand cubic feet, plus the 90 cent base rate, due to reliance on more expensive intrastate gas to replace allocations from United Gas Pipe Line Co. The city is holding back United supply to repay past excess usage while using Gas Transportation Company gas for residential needs. The commission plans gradual restoration of United gas to meet residential demand.
