The Smoot Hawley tariff bill, raising duties on imports by over 107 million dollars annually, passes the Senate 44 to 42 after a protracted debate. It targets sugar, shoes, butter, cement, lumber, bricks and more and advances to the House with expected presidential signature next week.
Associated Press reports the Louisiana vote tally on a Senate roll call with 39 in favor from Republicans and 5 against from Democrats and 11 opposing from other parties. The list includes names such as Vandenberg, La Follette, Norris, Wheeler, and Watson among others. Foster Farm Labor-Shipstead is noted with one vote.
The senate farm group loses near unanimous support as the coalition of farm Republicans and Democrats opposes the debenture free relief plan. They argue increased agricultural duties and the absence of the debenture system render the relief ineffective. CONTINUED ON PAGE 17.
B. B. Carrington his wife and child from Dozier plantation near Rayville became violently ill after drinking coffee at a neighbor's home. The coffee was brewed in a pot previously used for tree poison. They were treated in Rayville and Monroe at St Francis sanitarium and improved after treatment.
United Press reports on Friday the 13th stats from the national safety council estimating 27,871 people affected. About 27,500 injuries, 265 accidental deaths, 47 fatal falls, 35 drownings, and 24 burn deaths are projected.
The 1930 census shows 16 472 people in New Orleans able to work and listed as unemployed. District census supervisor Frank Pfrankutchen announced the figure today in New Orleans.
At Kentucky state penitentiary two condemned murderers were executed in the electric chair. Ballard E. Ratcliffe, 35, died at 12:33 a m after being strapped in at 12:17, saying reporters looked scarier than he felt. Richard Edmonds, 36, died four minutes after the current began at 12:29. Ratcliffe killed W A Muse, 64, with a hammer at a Louisville cemetery during robbery. Edmonds killed night watchman Harry S. Long at a Louisville laundry.
Ernest Hodge also known as J C Bean, 30, shot and killed his wife Anna Hodge, 27, in Blytheville Arkansas. He fired at her mother and fled on foot toward the Mississippi River then into Missouri. He abandoned a stolen Memphis auto and faces first degree murder charges upon capture.
John C. Sheffield seeks a Phillips County grand jury investigation into alleged corrupt practices by supporters of Brooks Hays. He requests a special session and reports the bid for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming primary.
A Chicago mother 1200 miles at sea spoke to her two boys in their home by radio telephone aboard the U S Leviathan. Junius six asks if mother seasick and about ducks. Buddy two years older questions ship operation and loneliness. It was the first regular radio telephone link between Chicago and a ship at sea.
Burglars broke into the D. R. Sartor and Sons general merchandise store in Alto stealing an estimated 1000 to 1200 dollars. Fingerprint experts from the state bureau will inspect the scene later, as Deputy Sheriff Binion orders no disturbance to preserve evidence. Footprints near the rear window are among the few clues. The loss is covered by burglary insurance.
Monroe officials report Washington hearings on flood control yield likely radical changes to the Jadwin plan affecting the Bonnet Carre floodway and main stem levee setbacks. Mayor Bernstein Ethridge and Wilson met with Senator Ransdell and Rep Wilson urging urgency on a new Monroe post office project.
A new record gas well in Ouachita parish delivers 53,366,808 cubic feet daily from Fairbanks No. 2 owned by Hope Producing in section 25-20-4. Depth 2,301 feet in second sand. rock pressure estimated 1,050 to 1,100 pounds. Previous record Guthrie No. 3 of United Oil and Natural Gas produced 46,357,000 cubic feet daily in section 50-20-4, Ouachita parish.
Major General Lytle Brown, head of army engineers, urged a nationwide effort to design solutions preventing riverbank caving along the Mississippi. He argued success would remove a key obstacle to the Jadwin flood control plan, noting matress protection works but are costly, while new levees cost about half as much per mile.
In Yuma on June 13 Frank J. Gilmore claimed the world long distance wrong number record. He answered a London call about Ruth Jane Mix, daughter of movie cowboy Tom Mix, and replied with a sharp “Wrong number” after the caller pressed for details.
The legislature reports House Bills passed HB 102 increasing Laf ayette parish registrar of voters salary by a year. SB 10 would mark all paved highways for continuous traffic lanes. SB 25 ties ferry tax base to franchise amounts. SB 69 licenses entomology pathology and tree surgery with a new licensing commission. SB 133 allows foreign fire insurers to operate in the state. SB 35 makes roads opened for over a year parts of the state highway system. SB 35 failed 17 16.
Miss Aline Gains a 16 year old runaway from Slidell swallowed poison at a friend’s home in New Orleans when police arrived to take her back. She was treated in hospital and deemed out of danger. Her guardian Mrs Ida Emmerich had reported the girl’s absence to her parents prior to police involvement.
Police in Indianapolis announced the slaying of E. D. Pierson, 54, Chicago auditor for the National Baptist convention, was solved. Arrests included Rev. B. J. F. Westbrook and George Washington in Indianapolis, with Nashville arrests of A. M. Townsend releasing on bond. Pierson was found tied and shot, dumped in the Muscatatuck river near Scottsburg, Indiana, April 16 after he was believed to know too much about a $62,000 fund mismanagement.
Six pedigreed collie dogs escaped from a suburban kennel in Niles Center and seriously wounded six year old Lillian Meier before being driven off by her father August Meier. Police were ordered to shoot the remaining four dogs on sight. The child was hospitalized with deep wounds to arms and neck and may die. The State’s Attorney reports multiple complaints of wild dogs in the neighborhood.
Baton Rouge June 13. Public hearings on major tax proposals before the 1930 legislature were announced by Davis Richarme chairman of the house ways and means committee. The Ard Dugas bill for a graded chain store license schedule will be heard June 19 at 8 am. Bills on occupational license tax for electrical energy and a 15 percent wholesale luxury tax on gum and cosmetics face June 18 at 8:30 am. Richarme’s general license tax bill and a Vernon bill for a state amusement tax go before the committee June 17 at 8 am, with bills on billboard taxation also heard that morning.
Officers of the Retail Credit Association were elected at the annual meeting held at Hotel Monroe. E. H. Murrell was named president and also serves as director, with Alex Miller as vice president and H. B. Ryland as secretary. The secretary’s report notes 30,000 names on file, triple the 1928 figure.
The Constitutional League of Louisiana calls a statewide mass meeting of citizens who support enforcing the constitution and laws and economical government. The event will be in the community pavilion Baton Rouge on Wednesday night June 18 at 8 o clock with multiple speakers invited. Citizens of the state are urged to attend and participate.
Willis Strickland of Manning is hospitalized in Lufkin Texas with more than a hundred shotgun pellets in his body after Ashley Grimes allegedly shot at him near Grimes residence. Grimes warned Strickland to stay away then fired when Strickland approached the house. Strickland is expected to recover.
