A U S Marine patrol clashed with North Vietnamese troops inside the DMZ and carried wounded Marines to safety over mountains and jungle. Two CH46 helicopters were shot down during rescue, with all crewmen unharmed. Seven Leathernecks were wounded, four by friendly fire from a cover gunship.
Washington AP House Republicans pursue campus disorder bill but fail to win Nixon admin support. HEW Secretary Finch and Education Commissioner Allen oppose the fund cutoff. Finch seeks an alternate federal injunction approach with the Justice Department to curb campus disruption.

Twin City residents can expect partly cloudy skies today tonight and Friday with a rising chance of showers. Temperatures reached 95 yesterday and will run 90 to 94 today and Friday with lows 68 to 72 tonight. Main thundershowers increase Friday while Delta Agricultural forecast calls for 50 to 60 percent today dropping to 30 percent Friday. Winds mainly southerly 6 to 16 mph.

The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively backs a 12 month surcharge extension with a low income allowance to lift about 13 million people from tax rolls while preserving a 10 percent surtax and a six month 5 percent rate. The plan includes repeal of the investment credit and a one year postponement of certain excise tax drops.
The A P supermarket chain says a store manager was murdered and $50 million in arson damage hit its stores and warehouses in an underworld bid to force a brand of detergent. Queens DA says incidents spanned years and James A Castorina, 20, of Mamaroneck, charged with first degree arson for a $6 million Ridgewood Queens warehouse fire.
In New York the stock market slid further in moderate trading as the 8 percent bank rate increase from 7 percent weighed on sentiment. By 1 pm the Dow Jones average dropped 4.46 to 900.14, and the AP 60-stock average was down 1.4 at 320.3 with industrials down 2.9, rails up 0.1, and utilities down 0.9.
