Monroe voters gave initial approval to the Monroe Redevelopment Agency plan in a tight 66 vote margin, signaling support for the first phase of the urban renewal effort.
PFC Gary W. Silman, 20, of West Monroe, died near Hue in Vietnam on June 4 while serving with the 101st Airborne Division The Screaming Eagles. His family learned of the death by telegram and arrangements were handled by Kilpatrick Funeral Home. He is survived by parents, siblings, and grandparents, with another brother in Vietnam and a sister in West Monroe.
North Vietnamese forces attacked three U S bases south of Da Nang killing 14 Americans and wounding 68 while U S commanders reported 76 enemy dead. In the heaviest assault sappers breached an artillery base. 11 Americans died and 32 were hurt in close combat.
President Nixon has no plans for wage or price controls and does not expect any. Treasury Secretary Kennedy warned of potential runaway inflation but avoids ruling them out, favoring anti inflation tools like a 10 percent income tax surcharge. Ziegler said Nixon supports extending the surtax beyond June 30 and the White House maintains the same stance.
A five year old girl from St Paul Minnesota named Daphne Jax was injured by a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park. National Park Service reported her condition as serious at the Park Service Hospital in Lake Junction. She sustained a puncture wound and chest lacerations.

Malcolm Dickerson, son of Clayton and Mrs. Dickerson of Eros, returns to San Francisco after a two week family visit. Dickerson, married to Carol Read, served aboard the U S S Ranger in the Gulf of Tonkin during Vietnam War.
Prince Norodom Sihanouk announced Cambodia will resume diplomatic relations with the United States at the chargé d affaires level and sever ties with West Germany. He cited US notes on border recognition and cited the earlier 1965 break over U S troop incursions from South Vietnam.
The Viet Cong announced a provisional revolutionary government in South Vietnam and claimed the right to represent the people at the Paris peace talks. The NLF said the delegation in Paris would now come from the provisional government and would pursue open diplomatic and economic relations with all nations, including the United States, while avoiding military alliances. Algeria recognized the new government.
Two Army aircrewmen were killed when their helicopter crashed and burned at Lakefront Airport New Orleans. Witnesses saw the tail rise then the craft plunge and ignite near the runway as soldiers practiced takeoffs and landings. Names were withheld pending next of kin notification. A priest gave last rites to the victims.
The Monroe area will see partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures today tonight and Thursday with a rain chance rising from 30 percent to 50 percent on Thursday. FAA Selman Field recorded 88 yesterday and 70 last night with no precipitation. Highs reach 88 to 92 and tonight's low 70 to 74. Winds south 5 to 15 mph shifting south to southwest 10 to 20 mph on Thursday. Dew points mainly in the 60s and low 70s. sun shine probability 50 to 75 percent today and Thursday.

The skipper of the destroyer Evans testified a daily message outlining plans for destroyer escort deployment around the Australian carrier Melbourne Lin was not received before the collision that killed 74 Americans. Cmdr. Albert S. McLemore said the 24 hour period started June 2 and included the time of the 3:15 a.m. June 3 crash. He noted other Evans escorts also did not receive it, but Navy spokesmen stressed the message was only a daily program, not an order.

Moscow says Communist China provoked new clashes on the Soviet border and may try to spoil talks on the border question. Leonid Zamyatin said incidents likely aim to hinder consultations, responding to a Chinese protest note alleging Soviet killings in Sinkiang Province.
