Senate OKs parole curbs and party primary reform
The Louisiana Senate approved a bill by Sen. Adrian Deplantier to require offenders to serve at least one third of their sentences and strip the parole board of immediate parole power for first offenders, amid criticism that paroled offenders may exploit leniency. Sen. Gravelet proposed a constitutional amendment to end party primaries, mandating two elections with top candidates advancing, regardless of party, and a runoff. The Finance Committee rejected a $1.25 minimum wage proposal for state workers, while the Industrial Relations panel backed barring disability pay for workers who hold another job.
