New Trial Set For Negro Man In State Case
Wil bert Rideau, condemned for the 1961 Gulf National Bank bank holdup murder of Julia Ferguson in Calcasieu Parish, will get a new trial after the Louisiana Supreme Court ordered a venue change. The ruling aligned with a U S Supreme Court decision that cited extensive television exposure during Rideau’s arrest and interview, arguing it tainted the original jury. Trial judge Cecil C. Cutter had refused a venue transfer, and Rideau’s lawyers appealed to the state high court.
